Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming various facets of our lives, from healthcare and finance to education and entertainment. However, as AI systems become more integral to society, ensuring they are developed responsibly and ethically has never been more critical. Women, who have historically been underrepresented in the tech industry, are now playing pivotal roles in this crucial endeavor. Their contributions are not only shaping the direction of AI development but also ensuring that these systems are fair, transparent, and accountable. The Importance of Diverse Perspectives One of the fundamental reasons why women play a crucial role in developing responsible AI is the need for diverse perspectives. AI systems are only as good as the data they are trained on and the minds behind their creation. When the development team is homogenous, the risk of bias increases, leading to AI systems that may inadvertently reinforce stereotypes or exclude certain groups. Women bring unique insights and experiences to the table, which are essential for creating balanced and equitable AI systems. Their perspectives help in identifying potential biases and ensuring that AI solutions are inclusive. This diversity in thought is critical for developing AI that can serve a broad spectrum of society fairly.

Here is a very realistic point made some time back by a Mr. Madhu Kurup: "AI is not going to take your job, the person next to you who is cleverer and is using AI is going to take your job." Madhu Kurup is Indeed's vice-president of engineering. Fortune magazine further shared: Employees should be looking for ways to use AI to their advantage at work, instead of competing with it. So, I started to look around me and instantly I saw that the handicapped washrooms and nursing (breastfeeding) rooms should have a booking system, as well as an auto-UnLock - especially so for women who intend to breastfeed at certain fixed timing of the day. This auto-UnLock should function in such a way that shoppers/members-of-public who leave the washroom/nursing room respectively would never need to leave them locked from inside. Would AI be able to assist a shopping mall for this purpose? Let's put on our thinking caps!

As a woman working in AI, I’ve seen how technical decisions quietly shape people’s lives. I’ve learned that the most impactful choices rarely happen when a model is trained or deployed. They happen much earlier — in quiet meetings where assumptions are made, requirements are finalised, and “edge cases” are casually deprioritised. As a woman in AI, I’ve often found myself asking questions that slow the room down: Who will this system fail? What happens when it’s wrong? Who carries the risk when accuracy drops in the real world? Those questions weren’t always welcomed, but they were almost always necessary. Responsible AI is not just about technology — it’s about values. Women often bring a strong sense of care and responsibility into AI development. This doesn’t mean we are less ambitious or less technical; it means we naturally think about consequences. We tend to question assumptions, challenge “one-size-fits-all” thinking, and consider how technology affects people beyond the majority group. This perspective helps reduce bias, increase fairness, and build trust in AI systems. Women also lead with empathy and responsibility. We challenge assumptions, advocate for transparency, and push for systems that serve everyone — not just the majority. This perspective is essential as AI becomes more embedded in everyday decisions. When women are part of AI design and leadership, responsibility is built in, not added later. Our voices help ensure that AI reflects humanity — and that makes all the difference.

Women play a critical role in making AI systems less biased by influencing how problems are framed, how data is selected, and how outcomes are evaluated. However, women currently represent about 30% of the global AI workforce. Increasing their participation would help surface blind spots and reduce systemic bias, to obtain an AI that is more fair, representative, and aligned with real-world users.
