Bridging the Gap: Boosting Gender Equality and Belonging in the Workplace

The struggle towards gender equality continues to thread the needle in most industries. Statistics bear out the unfortunate reality that many women do not feel the same level of acceptance and inclusion at work as their male counterparts do. Ensuring that women feel a stronger sense of belonging could ultimately empower them to reach their highest potential and have a tremendous impact on the workplace. In this article, featuring insights from a keynote delivered by Rachel Shiel, Senior Vice President for Global Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Sustainability at Retail, we’ll explore the drivers of belonging and how we can enhance the sense of acceptance for women in the workplace.

An Overview of Belonging in the Workplace

"Belonging is absolutely a human need," Rachel noted in her speech. This basic need, akin to necessities such as food and shelter, fosters a feeling of acceptance and inclusion. It can contribute to individual health, happiness, and productivity, and encourage a focus on the greater organizational purpose. However, if employees - particularly women - do not feel this sense of belonging, organizations may not maximize the potential of the talent they’ve worked hard to attract.

Why is this the case? Why are women feeling less included?

The Case of Women in the Workplace

Reports, such as the 2021 culture report, reveal that women generally report lesser inclusion and belonging at work compared to men. They are less likely to feel comfortable voicing dissenting opinions. Moreover, many feel their unique backgrounds and identities are not valued within their companies, leading to a sense of exclusion that can impact contribution and performance. The advent of COVID-19 has only exacerbated these feelings, further driving the divide between genders in the workplace.

Impact of COVID-19 on Women

COVID-19, for all its challenges, has forced organizations to rethink the traditional office setup and adapt to remote working, which could offer women more balance between home responsibilities and work. Yet, it also comes with increased responsibilities at home, leading to a delay in career progression for many women.

  • It has been reported that female job loss rates due to COVID-19 were 1.8 times higher than male job loss rates globally.
  • Women have been seen to shoulder 29% more childcare per week than their male counterparts.
  • COVID-19 is expected to push an estimated 47 million additional women into extreme poverty, widening the gender poverty gap.

At present, gender parity in the workplace seems to be a distant target, but with intentional, purposeful strategies, there is hope yet.

How Does the Tech Industry Fare in Gender Equality?

The tech industry offers a wide range of exciting opportunities, and yet the percentage of women in tech-related roles is dishearteningly low at 21% of the global workforce. A McKinsey report revealed that only 24% of women and ethnic minorities in tech feel a sense of belonging at work. It is clear that we need to take intentional action to create greater inclusion in the industry.

Strategies for Enhancing Belonging in the Workplace

To amplify gender equality and belongingness in the workplace, action must be taken at both a macro and micro level. Some strategies could include:

  1. Sponsorship and mentoring, taking risks on talented employees and articulating career opportunities.
  2. Creating education and internal pathways that clarify career progression options and increase workplace flexibility.
  3. Encouraging digital inclusion and improving technology solutions for remote work.
  4. Supporting carers, those with special needs, and those with hidden disabilities.
  5. Channeling the power of technology to create more flexible, diverse working conditions.

Women in Tech: A Wielded Power

Rachel firmly believes in the potential and power that women bring to the technology sector. With their creative mindsets, empathy, and life experience, they can build solutions, pioneer new technology, and solve problems in unique ways. But in order to leverage these benefits, it is critical that businesses strive for true equality and diverse representation in their workforce. Only then will industries mirror the societies they serve.

A Call for Intentional Efforts Towards Gender Equality

The prolonged impact of COVID-19 has taken a considerable toll on women in the workforce. However, this challenge also presents an opportunity for us to rethink our efforts towards gender equality and belonging in the workplace. Specific, intentional measures should be implemented to help women overcome the impacts of these crises and not only recover, but thrive in their chosen fields. Now more than ever, it's crucial that we strive to bridge the gender gap and ensure a more inclusive, accepting workplace for all.
