Bridging the Gap: Women in Tech

Technical difficulties aside, it was an honor to be part of the Women in Tech Global Conference. Sharing my transition journey to a data-driven career only emphasized the essence of diversity in the tech industry. \n

Diversity in Tech and Why It Matters

While women represent nearly half of the global workforce, we are underrepresented in the IT sector, accounting for only roughly 30% of IT employees. This isn't only a women's issue either - other minority groups continue to be undervalued in this field.

So, why does diversity matter?

Studies have proven that diverse companies perform better; they financially outperform less inclusive companies, are more likely to hire top talent, and have a higher job engagement rate amongst employees. A diversity-rich team contributes to a more inclusive and safer product or service which caters to a wider audience. In fact, companies with considerable gender diversity are around 48% more likely to outperform gender-imbalanced organizations.

Unfortunately, the tech industry is not reflective of this, with less than adequate representation of women and other minority groups, especially in senior roles.

The Road to a Data Career

After starting my career in European Parliament and exploring the cryptomarket with Bitstamp, I transitioned to a more technical role with Revolut. Today, I find myself deeply engaged in operational and developmental projects related to data in Adyen, a payment company. This journey has been exciting, rewarding, and shows how the field is advantageous for problem-solvers and those who enjoy working with a diverse group of stakeholders.

The Power of Mentorship

Switching careers or entering a new field is seldom easy. This is where mentorship plays a pivotal role. It boosts representation, enhances employee engagement, and creates a culture in which learning becomes integral to your profession.

Answering Your Questions

During the conference, I was asked how to deal with problem-solving when data is insufficient. As a BI Administrator, my approach is to return to the stakeholders and try to acquire the necessary data for the project I am working on.

Despite some hiccups, the Women in Tech Global Conference provided me a platform to share my journey, encourage more women to consider tech, and underlined the importance of diversity in the tech industry. I urge everyone to visit the AAA Booth and connect with me on LinkedIn.

Get Involved

If you're interested in getting more involved in tech and data, consider the following:

  • Think about your interests and how to take the first steps in your journey.
  • Work on basic data projects and learn from other data professionals on YouTube.
  • Connect with data experts through professional networking events.
  • Always strive for problem-solving, learning, and making an impact in your field.

Despite the challenges, being in a data-driven role is deeply rewarding and opens an ocean of opportunities. With continuous learning, upskilling, and nurturing professional curiosity, you can thrive in the exciting field of data.
