We are looking for a software engineer with a good understanding of Linux distributions and especially Webserver technology. The ideal candidate has already gained some experience in developing software for a Linux distribution and understands the complex mechanic of package dependencies and the structure of a Linux system. The ideal candidate has actively developed software for Linux projects particularly Apache, Nginx or similar and has integrated these for use on Linux distributions. In your role as Linux Distribution Engineer - Webserver Specialist you will interface with Project Managers, Product Managers, Quality Assurance and with technology architects and experts. Your task will be to master the process in which software projects are built and provided to the product repositories in order to deliver an enterprise-ready Linux product. You will act on errors showing up in our staging area to identify problems and fix these and you will work interactively with the upstream community to enhance, extend and improve these software projects.

As a member of the Packaging team, you will be responsible (besides the Apache) for a variety of other packages that you will maintain in SUSE Linux Enterprise and openSUSE distribution. You will maintain the package itself, debug and fix issues, provide security fixes, update packages to the latest versions and deliver requested features for your packages. You will also cooperate and collaborate with the package upstream and openSUSE community and interact closely with SUSE Maintenance and Security team.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience

Expected skills:

• at least 2 years of experience in software development
• good general understanding of a Linux Operating System
• proficiency in at least one compiled (C/C++ prefered) and one scripting language (bash, python, ruby, ...)
• very good know-how on Apache and Nginx
• very good system debugging skills
• experience with building software packages for Linux systems
• familiarity with GCC, build automation tools (Make/CMake) and GNU Build System (Autotools)
• solid command of English to communicate successfully in a professional environment

Desired skills:

• experience with building a Linux distribution
• familiarity with the RPM package format
• broader hands-on experience in packaging software for Linux systems
• very good understanding of Webserver technology (Apache, Nginx) including modules and scripting support
• familiarity with the bigger realm of webserver technologies
