About the Role
We are currently seeking a Deputy Editor with experience in research as well as editorial experience to join Communications Sustainability – a new launch of a multidisciplinary open access journal in the Nature Portfolio. The journal will publish research across the fields pertaining to sustainability, including natural environment, energy transition, humans in the environment, food & water, governance, solutions, monitoring & assessment). The journal will initially be run jointly with Communications Earth & Environment, with a combined internal team and a joint Chief Editor, but separate Editorial Boards. Communications Sustainability complements our other Nature Portfolio open access titles, such as Nature Communications, the other Communications series journals and Scientific Reports as well as the suite of NPJs.
The Deputy Editor, Communications Sustainability is responsible for leading the journal’s editorial strategy liaising closely with the Chief Editor, for building and managing a diverse and efficient Editorial Board and for managing part of the joint team of internal editors. Key responsibilities of the Deputy Editor include support of launch activities, outreach to relevant communities and ensuring the Editorial Board Members cover the full breadth of subject areas and are engaged.
The position is offered on a full-time basis (starting as soon as possible), and can be located in our New York, Shanghai or Beijing offices.
Role Responsibilities:

Working with the Chief Editor to define journal aims and scope, develop the website, plan outreach activities, work with internal teams to set up the journal.

Line-managing part of the joint internal team Communications Sustainability/Communications Earth & Environment

Growing the editorial board to ensure adequate subject area coverage across the topics covered by the journal, in consultation with the in-house team and the Chief Editor.

Overseeing and developing Editorial Board Member engagement with the journal.

Handling original research papers and working closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review, at a 50% workload of a Senior Editor.

Liaising extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature Portfolio family and with experts in the international scientific community.

Attending conferences and visiting research institutions (in person and online).

Commissioning Reviews and Comment articles and writing Editorials.

Suggesting and overseeing Collections within both journals’ Collections program.

Ensuring Production receives manuscripts in an appropriate and complete state.

Other tasks as required.
To be considered for the position, you will have:
-
A PhD (or equivalent) in a discipline immediately relevant to sustainability, and ideally research experience in the environmental social sciences.

Previous experience coordinating peer review and making independent manuscript decisions within a world-class STM publishing company.

Experience of working with an external editorial board is desirable.

A genuine passion for scientific communication and promoting rigor and transparency in reporting research.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English (written and spoken).

An eagerness to engage with scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.

Strong workload management- and organisational skills.

The ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Thorough knowledge of the scientific community and its needs.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $100,000 - $110,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
