Session: Sustainability in the Digital Era
Technology has been the biggest disruptor and creator of opportunities over last few decades. For coming decades my hope is that Technology would enable equity, inclusivity and sustainability for all.
I have been a technology leader for over a decade now and have been working in the sustainability space for last few years. I am now building a technology powered sustainability organization to enable growing organizations become more sustainable. Through this talk hope to bring the awareness, passions and responsibility we all have to make our companies, organizations and communities more sustainable.
Biggest opportunity in the sustainability space where Technology can help is automation of data collection and reporting. Data is an ever growing important asset across the industries, but also remains to be the biggest challenge. Majority of the data collected and reported is manual and labor intensive. For sustainability efforts to be impactful it’s important to be able to collect, report, measure and optimize data in an automated way.
Artificial intelligence is proving to be another disruptor in coming years and has the power to make our future solution more productive and efficient. There are many sectors that fear that AI will take away the jobs but statistical the opposite is true, AI will create many more new jobs and with right training would be helpful for the workforces. But it is another space where sustainability efforts are important considering ethics, climate impact and bias areas.
Digital transformation is a double edged sword, On the one hand, automation and digitalization may lead to job losses in industries whose success is mainly based on the comparative advantage of countries in labour-intensive tasks, such as manual assembly of intermediate products that are important export goods. On the other hand, productivity increases through digitalization might be needed to withstand international competition
