Session: Building a team from a reorganisation

My team was born as a split of an existing team, in the context of a reorganisation aimed at having an e2e ownership of domains. With many commitments, tight deadlines, small size and the shift to hybrid work, this is probably not a typical start for a team. In this session, we’ll discuss pressing issues that any team leader has in these situations: creating a new culture and way of working while having to manage highly important priorities, effectively onboarding new members, coordinating handovers and takeovers, planning shared out-of-office support, enabling cross-craft collaboration, and last, but not least, finding the time and energy for your own development as a manager. I am excited to share my tips and tricks in navigating these challenges as a new manager and helping peers across the globe who might find themselves in similar circumstances.

Key Takeaways

  • You cannot put off your learning and development, waiting for a quiet time
  • The importance of collaboration across the organisation and building strong relationships with key stakeholders
  • Sometimes you have to say “no”

Bio

Currently Engineering Team Leader at Ocado Technology, I've been working at this disruptive tech company since 2018. Initially a software engineer, I moved up the ladder to Senior Software Engineer before being promoted to Engineering Team Leader. Lifelong learner, I have been broadening my tech and leadership skills by several means, like tutorials, books, talks and more. My academic background is in Algorithmics, specifically in Algorithm Engineering. I graduated in Computer Engineering and then obtained my PhD in Computer Science. An active member of the tech community, I have attended and been involved in the organisation of several international conferences, I taught in a first year programming course, and I co-supervised a degree thesis in Computer Science and a master thesis in Bioinformatics. I am proactive and work comfortably in interdisciplinary and international teams, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. My mother tongues are Spanish and Catalan, I have full professional working competence in English and an intermediate level of German.
