Session: Challenges Facing Black African Women in Tech
The gender gap in data professions and digital access is a growing concern in Africa. Female enrollment in data studies is steadily declining, and many women are discouraged from pursuing careers in tech. Shockingly, according to the UN, 3.7 billion people worldwide lack internet access, with women accounting for 50% of that figure. In Africa, the digital gender divide is not only persistent, but it's also widening, according to data.
The pandemic has underscored the necessity of technology access for all, especially girls. However, globally, women face a digital divide that hampers their adoption of digital technology, exposure, and usage. They also don't always benefit as much as men from digital technology.
In my talk, I will examine the challenges that African women face in the tech industry, particularly with regard to social, political, and economic aspects, including inadequate resources, poor technical infrastructure, recruitment bias, governmental policies, and social stereotyping. I will recommend solutions to both public and private sectors to help African women participate effectively in the technological revolution.
Let's work together to ensure that African women are fully empowered to embrace technology and thrive in the tech industry.
