Job Title: Anti-Piracy Investigations Manager – Analysis and Reporting

Location: London, Hybrid (min. 2 days per week in the office)

Short Summary of the Team:

The Anti-Piracy Team is part of the General Counsel’s Office, it is charged with the global protection of Springer Nature Group content and assets against piracy. The team is currently based in London, UK, and Shanghai, China.

Purpose of Role:

  • To manage and have first line responsibility for collation and production of quarterly, annual and adhoc custom Anti-Piracy reports.
  • To leverage data insights to enhance Springer Nature’s knowledge of how piracy affects the business.
  • To employ best practice to maintain the accuracy, integrity and reliability of data.
  • To have key responsibilities in regards to both specific anti-piracy investigations and in supporting specific areas of the business.
  • To assist and input to the company’s content protection project.
  • To maintain and update Anti-Piracy Hive (intranet) pages and general departmental communications.
  • To assist the Head of Global Anti-Piracy in the design and implementation of the annual Global Anti-Piracy Strategy and on complex investigations.
  • To continually cross train the Anti-Piracy Investigations Manager – Notice and Takedown and Third Party Management so that they are able to support in analysis and reporting work as required.
  • To be continually cross trained by the Anti-Piracy Investigations Manager – Notice and Takedown and Third Party Management to ensure the ability to support and stand in for them as required.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure timely collation and production of all departmental statistical reporting relating to takedowns and other anti-piracy work.
  • Analyse data from third party providers and internal systems and tools in order to provide insights on piracy and its relevance to Springer Nature.
  • To create, develop and refine both regular and custom reports for varied audiences and look for improvements/efficiencies in their collation, design and content.
  • Create and maintain data dashboards internally and with third party suppliers for real time information on key metrics.
  • To work with business partners to ensure that all reports are useful to them, and to consider revising reports to ensure that they are more relevant.
  • To manage the Anti-Piracy Hive presence and associated communications messaging, and to liaise with Head of Global Anti-Piracy and the General Counsel in regards to this where necessary.
  • To assist on complex investigations, and where necessary/appropriate be willing to lead these.
  • To assist the Head of Global Anti-Piracy in the overall design, implementation and review of the Global Anti-Piracy strategy.
  • To manage the implementation and refining of anti-piracy strategy for designated businesses (e.g. Apress, Nature Research).
  • To assist the Head of Global Anti-Piracy in designing and supplying anti-piracy training programmes.
  • To cross-train the Anti-Piracy Investigations Manager – Notice and Takedown and Third Party Management, and receive similar training from them, to stand in for or support each other as required.
  • To attend industry and cross industry meetings as required and take an active role e.g. PA Anti-Piracy working Group (APWG) – to include raising relevant agenda items and AOBs.
  • To attend other trade body groups e.g. STM-ETF as and when required, and to stand in for Global Head of Anti-Piracy as required – to produce informational notes for these meetings.

Key Relationships:

Internal:

  • Work proactively and independently with stakeholders, partners and other analysts to understand business problems and develop data driven solutions.
  • Consult with stakeholders throughout the organisation and external partners to ensure solutions meet business objectives.
  • Work with Head of Global Anti-Piracy and the rest of the AP team to design and implement global anti-piracy strategy.
  • Working with the Anti-Piracy Investigations Manager – Notice and Takedown and Third Party Management to ensure that all reactive and proactive queries requiring investigation work are handled and processed on a timely basis.
  • Reactively responding to internal anti-piracy reporters.
  • Working with the Anti-Piracy Investigations Manager – Notice and Takedown and Third Party Management, and third party services, to ensure that they supply all of the takedown data that is required in order to produce quarterly, annual, and adhoc custom reports.
  • Working with Senior Anti-Piracy Manager, China to assist them in their work where necessary, and in order to gain intelligence on China focussed piracy with cross border/global elements/vectors.
  • Working with all relevant areas of the Springer Nature publishing and management to define and implement proactive strategy, in order to best manage requirements (subject to resources).
  • Working with internal legal team in order to obtain best possible legal advice relating to investigations.
  • As required; a two-way exchange with the Communications team on any AP actions with PR sensitivities, and when required for Hive pages or other internal communication strategies.

External:

  • Third party services.
  • Copyright protection/abuse teams at large ISPs, platforms (inc social media) and websites, as well as associated internet infrastructure services.
  • Trade Bodies and cross industry groups e.g. PA and their associated members, Law enforcement, copyright agencies, and where necessary, external law firms.

Experience:

  • Ideally – Extensive experience of having worked in anti-piracy, intellectual property, Enforcement and/or IT/Internet industries, alternatively detailed experience of having performed data management, manipulation and report production either within publishing or a similar industry, coupled with a demonstrable interest and knowledge of intellectual property law.
  • Desirable – Experience of having worked in at least one media industry – ideally some publishing experience and/or knowledge but this is not essential.
  • Very strong global contacts in anti-piracy units, enforcement bodies, ISPs and/or relevant trade bodies or industry IP groups.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • High proficiency and experience in manipulating vast amounts of data. Ability to interpret, analyse and interrogate complex data and to produce reports relating to this.
  • Excellent understanding of new media and related technologies, particularly extensive knowledge of legal and illegal content services and capabilities of the internet, mobile networks and associated hardware/software technologies.
  • Strong commercial awareness of the impact on publishers of current and anticipated future trends in consumer behaviour.
  • Knowledge of Intellectual Property law particularly Copyright Designs and Patents Act, Ecommerce Directive and Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Some knowledge of Trade Mark law.
  • Some knowledge of internet infrastructure e.g. CDNs, hosting providers, domain registrar and registries and how they fit together within the internet ecosystem.
  • OSINT experience/Knowledge.
  • A hands-on approach; a self-motivated individual who has clearly defined initiative but is also a strong team player - able to juggle between sole and group working.
  • Efficient, rigorous, well-organised, process driven.
  • Ability to perfect and constantly improve ways of working through efficiencies and creative innovation.
  • Attention to detail and persistence in problem solving.
  • Strong administrative skills - ability to collect, handle, maintain and manipulate large amounts of data safely, efficiently and accurately.
  • Demonstration of personal credibility and integrity.
  • Strong communication skills at all levels of the business, and an appetite to build and maintain new contacts - particularly at more senior levels.

Qualifications     

  • Must have - Either relevant training, and/or qualification(s) in related disciplines, and/or a background and proven track record in anti-piracy/IP protection work, or of working within an industry where similar data management, analysis and reporting skills are required.
  • Desirable – Python, Google BigQuery and/or SQL proficiency. Familiarity with cloud computing and data products of major providers e.g. Google Looker Studio, Looker, Big Query. Online enforcement experience with admins, ISPs, domain registrars. Cybersecurity incident response and mitigation experience, particularly in relation to content protection. Able to demonstrate an on-going attendance on relevant work related courses/seminars, and/or work placements/secondments.
