Position Overview

The Communities and Engagement team at Springer Nature manages a portfolio of engagement channels, including online communities, blogs, and social media channels. The Community Manager – Editorial is responsible for the management and delivery of our programme of Editorial Communities, which seek to strengthen our relationships with our Editors and Editorial Board Members and increase their visibility with the wider research community. This role has a particular focus on the Editorial Communities; engaging over 100,000 external Editorial Board Members and ensuring they have the support, resources, and network opportunities to carry out their roles successfully.

Responsibilities 

1. Maintaining, supporting and expanding the Communities: Managing the day-to-day running of a set of Editorial Communities, including managing and supporting users, reviewing content, and encouraging engagement across the platform. Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting and delivering the Communities and Engagement team strategy
  • Working with the other Community Managers and the Senior Communities Manager to regularly review and update the Communities to provide a consistent and positive experience for all users.
  • Working with platform and product teams to support the development, tailoring and expansion of the Editorial Communities and associated processes.
  • Moderating community content, including relevant comments on communities, taking action where appropriate to enforce our community and social media policies or share feedback with internal teams.
  • Monthly reporting on analytics and progress against KPIs
  • Liaising with internal teams to establish or improve the collection of data on key measures and analytics.
  • Working with Editorial leads to interpret data and create actionable recommendations for Community improvement.

2. Providing platform and content support to external and internal audiences. Ensuring that community members receive the best possible service whilst working with Springer Nature. Responsibilities include:

  • Regularly providing feedback and guidance to internal publishing and editorial teams, focusing on best practice for communication and digital engagement to help them engage with their Editorial Board Members
  • Delivering training and support for internal staff, Editors and Editorial Board Members
  • Sharing regular updates with internal teams on Community activities, development and impact, both through the intranet and wider meetings
  • Championing accessibility and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion across the Communities’ channels
  • Working closely with the Senior Editorial Communities Manager to use analytics reports and author surveys to identify areas of strength or in need of improvement, communicating these to relevant internal and external teams.

3​. Support the continuation and increasing visibility of the Communities: encouraging engagement and growing the reach of content on the Communities platform. Responsibilities include: 

  • Undertaking key activities to promote the engagement of Editorial Board Members with their Communities 
  • Working with the Editorial Communications Managers and Editorial Community Managers to maintain a flow of content for the Communities and wider Springer Nature channels to engage and celebrate the contributions of Editorial Board Members
  • Managing the development and delivery of a programme of Community activities that seek to recognize and celebrate Community members, whether that be regular contributors, early career researchers or under-represented groups
  • Supporting the identification, promotion and sharing of content on wider channels
  • Being a recognized touchpoint for a particular area of the Communities and a liaison between the Communities and key stakeholders
  • Contributing to regular reporting and communications on the impact of Editorial Communities activity for stakeholders at different levels of seniority to raise awareness of Communities activity and initiatives.
  • Leading projects to identify and demonstrate the impact of the Communities for our Editorial audiences.

Key Relationships

  • Collaborating with the other Community Managers focussed on different research disciplines.
  • Building and maintaining a close relationship with the Research Communities team, Communities’ external platform team and Springer Nature’s Product and Platform Group
  • Working closely with the Editorial Engagement Team to ensure that the Communities support the smooth onboarding of new Editorial Board Members
  • Working closely with the Editorial Engagement Team to support and manage the delivery of a regular programme of communication campaigns for Editorial Board Members
  • Working closely with the Editorial Training managers to ensure that the Communities support Editors and Editorial Board Members take up training opportunities. 
  • Work closely with the Editorial Engagement and Research Communities teams to identify opportunities to create and commission content for the Communities
  • Building strong relationships with editorial and publishing teams of relevant journals to support them in utilising the Editorial Communities and identifying topical and timely areas of content for further promotion through the Communities

Experience, skills and qualifications 

Experience

  • Experience in STM journal publishing, with a good understanding of peer review and the role of Editorial Boards
  • A demonstrable understanding of the scientific research and publishing landscapes
  • An understanding of best practices relating to Editorial Board activity and engagement
  • Experience with online communities, blogs, and/or social media platforms, ideally in a scientific or publishing setting
  • Experience of building and developing relationships with the research community and academia
  • Experience of managing projects with cross-departmental stakeholders
  • Excellent administrative, organisational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues and senior researchers
  • Knowledge of analytics and reporting tools

Qualifications      

  • University degree, preferable in science or a similar qualification, or a similar level qualification or experience
  • A PhD, MSc, or higher scientific degree (desirable)
