Session: Navigating Negotiation: For Yourself, Your Team and Your Organisation
At every stage of our careers, we need to negotiate on behalf of ourselves and others for time, resources, even salary. As the global economy slows, and budgets are tightened, being able to negotiate effectively becomes even more imperative. Yet the research tells us that due to unconscious bias, women are often penalised for daring to initiate negotiations, especially in male dominated industries like Technology, particularly when it comes to salary negotiation. Sadly, the techniques that work for men (who make up the majority of mentors and role models in Tech) often backfire when used by their female counterparts. This 20-minute talk highlights the unconscious bias at work in negotiation, 3 key ways organisations can remove systemic barriers so that women can negotiate successfully and how individuals can use evidence-based techniques to get what they need.
