Session: The Fairness Revolution: Black Women in the Era of AI
The Artificial Intelligence revolution reflects the greatest aspirations of humanity to reach beyond what we thought possible. Ironically, the term ‘revolution’ has a dual meaning. It can mean to disrupt the status quo in a dramatic way, but it can also mean the movement of an object in a circular or elliptical course around another object or its own axis, a repeated cycle. Nothing represents this duality better than society. Society has existed in bursts of dramatic change while concurrently and inexorably repeating cycles. We have created and will continue to create technologies that change the world but that are infused with the biases of our history. Artificial Intelligence is the latest example. In this fireside chat with DoubleVerify’s Georgette Ledgister and Beatrice Botti, we will explore the history and future of bias in AI. Georgette will discuss her experience as a Black woman in tech, covering how biased AI can exacerbate the challenges faced by the most vulnerable communities. Taking attendees on an inspiring journey exploring the history of bias in AI, Georgette will focus on how every day is an opportunity to do better, drawing from our experience of how DoubleVerify proactively tackle bias in AI in our solutions and our workplace culture. From learning about the origin of some AI’s inherent bias, for example how Shirley cards have impacted AI’s abilities in recognizing skin tones and features, to celebrating the Black women that are shaping the future of AI today, attendees will leave this session with a new understanding of bias in AI and new tools to identify and positively influence the future of tech.
