Job Title: Government affairs Manager EU

About the Role 

This is a permanent, full-time position in Brussels (fully home based), supporting Springer Nature’s understanding of and response to EU public policy challenges.

Essential to this role is a solid understanding of the intersection of business and government, with experience in advancing topics through political processes.

Key policy topics covered include intellectual property, science and research communications, digital agenda and AI.

The role reports to the Vice President Public Affairs (who is based in Berlin) and works closely with colleagues in Government and Corporate Affairs globally. 

Role Responsibilities

  • Identifying and monitoring all business-relevant political and policy developments at EU level, and assisting with their internal communication; 

  • Building Springer Nature position and network in Brussels by participating in relevant industry groups, trade associations and other forums as appropriate;

  • Establishing and maintaining key relationships with relevant external stakeholders and supporting education on industry and policy topics;

  • Supporting the analysis of policy issues, in close collaboration with other teams across the business, to assess likely impact on Springer Nature;

  • Working with the VP Public Affairs to develop policy positions and high-quality written submissions to Commission departments, European Parliament committees and other relevant bodies.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of related government affairs experience working with EU institutions, with an established network of contacts among policymakers and institutions;

  • Sound practical knowledge of EU decision-making processes and structure and interplay of organisations;

  • Good academic credentials, adept at analysing and interpreting legislative language;

  • Spoken and written proficiency in English (necessary to communicate with SN colleagues as well as external stakeholders), additional language skills in French or Dutch beneficial due to local requirements;

  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain the network with the different stakeholders involved in the decision-making process;

  • Able to work effectively in team settings and independently, demonstrating self-motivation and initiative;

  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and complexity, with a capability to collaborate across diverse cultural backgrounds.
