Balancing work and personal life is a challenge many women in tech know well, and supportive leave policies are invaluable tools in achieving this balance. For women managing diverse roles—whether as mothers, caregivers, or leaders—effective leave policies should mean not having to choose between family responsibilities and career aspirations. However, the reality is that many current leave policies fall short of providing the real support women in tech need. Instead of offering the flexibility and inclusivity required to address these challenges, policies often add stress by being rigid and limited in scope.

For instance, limited parental leave, restrictive sick days, and the absence of mental health days make it difficult, if not impossible, to balance personal and professional lives without sacrificing one for the other. What’s often missing is an understanding that life’s demands are unpredictable. For women in tech, especially single mothers or those with caregiving responsibilities, the rigidity of current leave policies can create an impossible choice between pushing through exhaustion or feeling they’re compromising on their career goals.

A truly supportive leave policy should do more than exist on paper; it should reflect a genuine commitment to fostering work-life balance. From my perspective What’s often missing in these policies is an understanding that life’s demands don’t operate on a predictable schedule. For women in tech, particularly single mothers or caregivers, the rigidity of existing policies can add stress rather than alleviate it. Many of us need the flexibility to attend to last-minute family needs, health appointments, or simply time to recharge. Without adaptive policies, women are often put in a position where they either push through exhaustion or feel they’re compromising on their career goals.
