The Community & Partnerships editorial team is seeking a proven, science-minded communicator and events enthusiast to join its team in China. This is a rare opportunity to help develop a fast-growing content marketing business, work with a talented global team of editors, and produce award-winning commercial content on subjects that matter. This role is ideal for an ambitious and organized science communicator, journalist, television producer or scientific event producer.

Purpose of the role: The Editorial Program Manager will manage, inform and support custom events and Nature Conferences for Chinese partners to ensure they have a strong editorial perspective and compelling speakers. This role will report to the Senior Editor, Custom Media in China and work with Chinese partner organisations to develop engaging custom events about life sciences, biomedical research and physical sciences. Working alongside event producers, editors and project managers, this role will manage the annual events program and directly lead the editorial planning of specific events.

Need to do:

Key tasks:

  • Manage the annual events program in China, including custom events and Nature Conferences, to ensure every event is engaging for audiences.
  • Lead and inform the editorial planning of specific custom events, including the development of compelling event themes and the identification/recruitment of scientific speakers.
  • Work with clients to refine the invite list, invite speakers and assemble a final speakers list for custom events.
  • Manage tasking and assignments of editorial support for all custom events from an in-house roster of editors, event producers and event moderators.
  • Evaluate and improve all sales proposals, both for Nature Conferences and custom events for Nature partners.
  • Communicate directly with speakers and clients on editorial matters to serve as an editorial voice for event projects and to work through concerns and issues.
  • Conduct pre-interviews with speakers to draw up scientific topics for custom event panel discussions, or arrange pre-interviews between the speakers and a moderator.
  • Assemble potential run-of-show for each event, with input from the moderator. Finalise run-of show, based on client feedback.
  • Depending on skills, produce and moderate certain events, or assign moderators and producers to those events.

           

Need to know

Qualifications:

  • Experience in event development, event production and/or television production.
  • Experience producing content for academic events.
  • A background in science, preferably including either a degree or a background in science communication.

Skills/knowledge:

  • Written and spoken fluency in Mandarin Chinese and English.
  • Strong science communication and/or event background, with good grasp of how to hook an audience with engaging topics and programs.
  • Ability to identify suitable researchers for various events with focus on different subjects.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the international research ecosystem, the Chinese science and research landscape, and the opportunities and challenges for Chinese researchers.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under tight deadlines, with a high attention to detail and accuracy, and be able to efficiently prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to work collegially and effectively with event managers, journal editors and writers.
  • Have familiarity with legal and journalistic ethical principles such as conflict of interest.
  • Established contacts with freelance writers and event producers desirable.

Experience:

  • Experience managing and producing academic events.
  • Experience in science communication, scientific publishing, or conducting content marketing/digital marketing for research institutions preferred.
