Achia Nila Empowering Women through Technology
Empowering Women Through Technology: A Journey Towards Innovation
Aila, the founder of Women in Digital, shares her journey of empowering women through technology. Her primary focus is to convince more women to join the tech industry, irrespective of their backgrounds. Here, we explore the strategies she implemented, challenges she faced, and her vision for how technology can change the dynamics of women’s role in society.
Setting the Stage for Women in Technology
“Technology doesn't have any gender; anybody can learn from technology. We don't need an engineering degree to learn technology.”
When Aila founded Women in Digital, she saw a global gap: only 25% of women work in the tech industry in the United States, while a mere 5% engage as tech women entrepreneurs. International stats showed a similar skewed ratio concerning Asian countries too. This called for change.
Aila considered that the only three things required to step into the tech industry are:
- Interest in technology
- Not being apprehensive about learning new technical skills
- Good grasp of English as most tech-lingo is in English
Revolutionizing Women’s Presence in the Tech Industry
Rather than just dreaming, Aila started making strides towards her goal. Along with teaching coding to young girls in urban areas, she visited rural areas educating girls about technology, digital marketing, and entrepreneurship.
Despite initial hurdles like access to education and technological resources in the rural area, she identified that rural girls were immensely creative. She taught them graphics designing, product marketing, and more, making them employable in various online marketplaces.
Demystifying Technology and Its Reach
Another misconception Aila set out to debunk is the notion that one needs to be a programmer to be in the tech industry. From content writing to digital marketing, from graphics designing to imagery retouching, there is a wide array of work sectors one can choose from within the technology industry.
For example, if one is a doctor, they can use technology to handle appointments and to provide online consultations. Similarly, a good cook can use technology to show off their cooking skills on social media, thereby inviting business opportunities.
The primary takeaway is that technology can be incorporated into every field. And those who cannot go outside can conveniently work from home, provided they have the requisite skillset and interest in technology.
Making a Difference, One Step at a Time
Aila’s mantra for problem-solving is to make technology your best friend and take one small step at a time. From her first job as a junior software engineer to promoting as a CTO, she has proven that women are equally capable.
Her organization, Women in Digital, is now executing diverse projects like stopping child marriage, promoting continuous learning, and more. She emphasizes the role of technology in driving these initiatives, and her team predominantly constitutes women.
Aila asserts, “Technology is the right thing for women. Anybody can learn from anywhere, you can learn technology from your home if you have good bandwidth and a reliable laptop.”
In conclusion, Women in Digital, under Aila's leadership, is empowering more women to join the tech industry and assisting them to become financially independent. Determined to break the socio-economic barriers that have held women back for many years, Aila is committed to enabling women, both in urban and rural areas, to harness the power of technology for their betterment. This story stands as an inspiration for everyone who aspires to venture into the world of technology and make meaningful contributions.

Hello, Ban, I am Aila founder, women in Digital uh uh to our today's topic is empowering women through technology. So uh my motive is bringing more women in tech. And uh when I designed my business model, women in digital, when I started thinking about bringing more women in technology. In that time, I think how it's possible because there are few amount of women come in the uh engineering field. So how can I be more and more even in technology? So in that time, I think uh I should design a model where I can able to bring more even in technology. So I start analysis. Uh II I have checking the global statistics and all the also the uh different um closing uh Asian countries statistics. So in that my pp face one commerce statistics if I think about USA OK, Nico. So if I think about USA in that time, I see only 25 women in working in the tech industry and uh only 5% women working uh as a tech women entrepreneur. So this is very poor number because we always uh looking at United States because they are doing all good So we always follow them.
But if their statistics is something like that, then how can we uh uh can let us, uh we are able to bring more women, women in technology. So, uh in that time when I start uh thinking and planning, in that time, I have visited different uh places. I do lots of uh research. And uh in that I, I had uh I had uh get one common thing that is actually uh people are thinking women are not good in the stream. Women are not good in, in the technology. But in my research, uh actually technology doesn't have any g anybody can learn from technology, anybody can learn from technology. We don't need any engineering degree to learning uh technology. But yes, what we need actually to come in the tech industry, we only need one. we need only 33 things, one interest on technology. Some women and girls, they are afraid about technology, but we don't need to be afraid about technology. We love technology and we need to use to on it and then we need to improve our skin. And after that, we need to good in English because technology is depend on English. So uh actually, uh we don't need uh what I am saying, we don't need um a engineering degree to be a technology technologist. So we need to learn uh proper skills. So in the technology, we can do so many things. So if you think country like us as we uh we have a tech company and there are all 25 women engineer working in our head office. They are uh developing mobile applications, game software for international clients.
So uh but the thing is I made them, they all are not engineered but they have interest, enough interest to learn technology. So I teach them and uh after that, uh I have test their skills and the, yeah, they are doing good. So when I started in women in digital is 2013. Before that I was working in uh some multinational companies. And um the thing come from on when I am working in different multinational companies. In that time, I am facing some problems when I go to the um work in that time, they think uh women are not good in coding. I am engineer. So they think I am I will be good in them designing. And in that time, I think uh uh why they are thinking like this way because uh in my class, I'm doing good in engineering class. So that's why IIII I have uh in engineering course, but why they are uh thinking like this. And then I start um asking uh why you are not what to take in your programming team. I want to be a coder. And the thing is uh people are asking uh pe people are saying something like this. See you are a woman. You are not the perfect fit for the tech industry because uh women are not good in coding and even mathematics. So I have taken this is as, as my personal challenge and I proved um women are good in coding.
So I have worked in nine years and in that time, I, I am joined as a junior software engineering and while I quit my job in that time, um my III I am promoted as ac tu. So I have proven myself. And then I think OK, I should bring in more women in technology. So I, I had to start teaching coding to the girls. And uh I started in the urban area because I'm living in an urban area. So I am start teaching the coding to the urban area. But suddenly I think uh if I really want to bring in more women in technology, then if I teach only urban girl, then it it never happened. So I am going to the different place uh in uh in uh my country and I am going to the villages. So when I go to different village in that time, I get one thing that is uh they are not able to access the education and then how can I teach them the technology things? So then I realized, yes, it's a tough thing. And then I start looking in the primary schools and colleges, I look uh look after the doctor students where they are and then I uh uh consider actually I need to, I need to, I need to plan how I am um teach them coding or how I can make them digitally enable. And yeah, uh but in Bangladesh, in my country, there is one thing in rural girls, they are very much creative and uh then I think, OK, I should uh help them what, whatever they are they known. So I will support them in their known place.
So I, I am looking and in, I, uh, looking all the girls and I am talking to their families and I get one things, they are, uh, de designing some heavy crops, they are designing dresses for their own. And then I think, ok, I will make them take an hour. So I teach them photography. I teach them digital marketing. I teach them how to, they are able to update their product in Facebook and also the Ecommerce site. So see here that the girls are not engineered, they are only, uh, of plus eight or they are the student of plus 11 and after that, they quit their schools. So, but these girls, they are start working with my team and when I teach them, they are, uh, adapting very first, all the technical things. So then I understand, ok, if I can, I can make a good materials for them, then the, the girls will come with the tech industry. And, uh, when I, uh, uh, go in different village and uh uh study on the village, um womens and also the schools, colleges statistics.
In that time, I get the result, there are so many girls adopted out because of their financial area and um because of their, their families is not capable to t um uh uh give their education fees. So that's why they are not going to schools. And in that time I designed another project. So learning and learning and then those who are designing the cra craft and other things. Uh then I, I teach them the graphics designing and then they uh when they are we able to capable to the graphics design, then they are start working in my team. And also in the uh online marketplaces like uh Google uh sorry, Codex Elan are different type of market places. So this is the way day by day I prove uh myself actually uh uh everybody not to uh no, no need to be an engineer to come in the tech industry. They only need their interest in the tech industry and proper skills. So if anyone able to learn the proper um proper things and they don't, we need to study as a, as a co uh in the computer engineering things, they only need to uh done their study on a very specific thing.
So it, it can be content writing in ca it can be digital marketing, it can be the graphics design, it can be um image re touching. So there are so many things in our technical field, you don't need to be a programmer. Always I if you if you are uh are able to be a programmer that is good, you can be a data science, you can work on the robotics. There are so many field in technical things but technology is the things. Actually, this is the main thing to reach the global glo globally. And uh if you want to bring new internationally, technology is most important things. So what women uh who are women in digital do? So we are doing, we, we are actually working um bring in more women in technology and make their, them financially empowered so that they are not dropped out from tech technical field. They love and I will give them money, they will love to work with me. So I am trying to design that model model in digital. So we are designing different type of project like uh we uh we are designing a project uh stopping child v. Uh We are designing project um uh in the COVID-19 situation online schools. So they are uh they are continue their study and they are continue their training in our online platform. And the interesting thing is in my team. Uh There are uh 99% are uh women.
So if my team is about to doing in technical things, I believe each and every woman can do. But they need to know what actually how they are come into the, in the tech industry. So suppose I want to give one example. Suppose you are a group cook so you can cook very good food. So you, but yeah, if you want, you can make a business through uh through your cook cooking. Uh you can display this in your Facebook and other social media and uh you can make youtube videos. So uh that, that is why you also come in the tech industry. So uh and someone uh if I think about any doctor, doctor can call um counseling and they uh they can take some say uh uh uh appointment through uh internet. And uh they, he can um uh uh uh he can watch his uh patient uh through online. So uh doctor also can come in the industry. So each and every, every uh area people if they want to. I mean, the industry is very easy and for uh like a country like us, like Asian countries, there are so many Muslim countries. So there is a good area. Uh women are not always able to uh come uh outside from the home. So they um for them actually, it is very easy to uh work from home because there are so many marketplaces in uh different um uh countries.
Uh so they can work from the home and just they need to the proper um skill set if uh they are able to um pick the right skill, then nobody is getting any problem in any anywhere. And the thing is actually that um the, the main thing is uh that you're interest in technology. So if you love you, you need to make your boyfriend or your loved one in with tech technology, then you will get, you are able to do anything. So uh I, if you want to la uh think about my, my story, I was in a, I, I brought in the and then I come to the cities for my high study. And when I am student, a mid, mid uh second year student of uh te uh technical schools. In that time, I start my first jobs and I am facing so many difficulties but everywhere I have proved myself. So um my thing is I was taking is a challenge and I want to always prove myself, that's why I am about to being uh I uh able to um be a good technical um uh technologist in my country. And I am also working in the International Telecommunication Union. Uh I am teach uh D I am going to different country to teach uh coding. Uh the girls um who, who, who are interested to learn technology.
So actually this is the way you can uh come in the tech field. Main thing is again and again, I say one thing that is the main thing is interest if you have good interest on technology, you, you will able to do anything. So uh this is actually all about uh the things and uh you, I can show you some of our work. Uh So this is the rural area. We are t uh um uh teaching the technical things and is to break the barrier. And these girls are working as a freelancer with my teams and uh different companies and uh the uh the, the, the the uh this is another way this is a per urban area. So they also learning technical things from our teams. And this is another area. Uh This uh this project is very interesting for us because these all are child marriages big and they are w working with my uh my team and guests foundation, give them these laptops. So this is the way they are changing their lives through technology. And uh we, we have taken different uh project and program in different countries. We have adding some program in Nepal and uh uh India also. So this is the way actually we are being bringing more women in technology and we believe that technology is the right thing for women. Anybody can learn from any anywhere. You can learn technology from your home if you have a good bandwidth that with the good laptops.
So uh you can, you can get you if you want to learn, you have everything in the online nowadays. So when I have started, I need to learn everything from books. But nowadays Google have everything, all the data in the online. So you just need to know what you want to learn and why you want to learn. If you wa if you are uh good in technology, you can do anything. If you learn any technology you don't need to always use. That was in your uh working life, you can teach your kids, you can share knowledge with your friends if what you want you learn. And uh uh yeah, I uh and one thing I want to share um in technology thing or I get another problem when I am start teaching the technical things to the different villages and also in the urban area. Uh people think uh technology have, there are so many problems. They are focused on cyber uh cybercrime, cyber uh security issues. So you actually uh the if you have there are good and bad things. So you need to think what you want to be. So if you want to pick the good ones, so you never uh so you never face any problem. But if you have picked the bad things, then you will face in problem. So everywhere that is, it is not, it is not in the field, it is everywhere.
So you need to decide what you want to and why are you want to see yourself? And yes uh uh uh it is all about uh me, it is all about um, women in digital and also the topics.
