Job Title: Editorial Communications Manager

Location: Heidelberg – Hybrid Working Model

About the Role

The Springer Nature Editorial Engagement Team works to engage and mobilize the external community of over 90,000 Editors and Editorial Board Members (EBMs). The Editorial Communications Manager is responsible for the delivery of a regular program of campaigns to inform and earn the loyalty of the editorships of externally run Springer Nature journals. Working with teams across Springer Nature, you will manage the pipeline of content, creating and coordinating written and multimedia content to be shared via our core communication channels, as well as supporting our editor events program. You will also serve as a recognized touchpoint for the development and implementation of editor communication plans for key projects and organizational changes. 

Role Responsibilities:

1. Programme Development: Work with the Senior Editorial Engagement Manager to develop and deliver our editor communications strategy in line with organizational objectives. Responsibilities include:

  • Working with the Senior Editorial Engagement Manager to devise and implement a regular program of campaigns targeted at the Editor and EBM audiences
  • Collaborating with the Editorial Communities Team to maximize engagement with Editorial Board Members through the implementation of a community-led strategy
  • Identifying key needs and priorities for this audience and devising effective communication plans to address these, utilizing the different channels available
  • Advising on the development of and devise new initiatives to engage our external Editors and EBMs
  • Coordinating monthly reporting on analytics and progress against KPIs
  • Researching and self-educating to stay abreast of best practice in external communications

2. Content Creation: Day-to-day management of a regular program of campaigns targeted at the external Editor and EBM audiences. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing the development and delivery of a pipeline of regular communications to these audiences
  • Working with internal stakeholders, preparing written and multimedia communications to motivate Editors and EBMs
  • Serving as a key point of contact on Editor communications, advising on the development of project specific and ad-hoc communications
  • Coordinating a regular program of policy update communications in collaboration with Springer Nature’s Editorial Excellence Team
  • Working with the Senior Editorial Engagement Manager to coordinate and deliver a series of virtual events to engage external Editors and Editorial Board Members 
  • Leading the development of best practice guidance and template materials to support Editorial and Publishing Teams in engaging with their Editors and Editorial Board Members 
  • Communicating directly with external Editors and Editorial Boards Members where appropriate 

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience of research publishing, with a good understanding of peer review and the role of Editorial Boards
  • A demonstrable understanding and interest in scientific research and the publishing landscape
  • An understanding of best practices relating to Editorial Board activity and engagement
  • Experience of building and developing relationships with the research community and academia
  • Experience of managing projects with cross-departmental stakeholders
  • Awareness of best practices for accessibility and inclusion
  • Experience working with global teams
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to tailor content for different audiences and platforms
  • Confidence in communicating, engaging and working cooperatively with stakeholders at various levels of seniority, including researchers, editors, and other partners in a professional manner
  • Excellent organizational skills including coordinating multiple priorities
  • Self-motivated with the ability work independently
  • Ability to work cooperatively and flexibly with other members of the team
  • A university degree or equivalent experience
