Women in Tech Mentoring Program

Since I was a kid I loved STEM, but I discovered programming only in high-school when I started learning Pascal and started being interested in algorithms. Back then I did not realize that there were only few girls interested in programming. I was lucky enough to have very motivated female peers, an inspiring female programming teacher and a mother who believed in me. So it was an easy decision to study Computer Science Engineering at university, studying what I loved. After graduation I continued with an Embedded Systems Master course in a foreign country, The Netherlands, which now I call home. The biggest culture shock for me, coming from Romania to The Netherlands, was being the only lady in my class. Why The Netherlands? Because Eindhoven is a great high tech hub and one of the coolest centers of innovation and I was dreaming of being part of this. After finishing my master I started working in the semiconductor industry at Synopsys as a Research and Development Engineer. By now I got used to often being the only lady in the room/meeting. Now, 11 years later, I see that although more ladies are choosing to work in the tech environment, we are still only a few in high tech and this is still something that surprises me. I like to do my part in encouraging more women to join this field, to be part of the innovation, to help creating a more balanced future for our kids.
