Session: Why it’s time to action Diversity in LegalTech
Women remain underrepresented in key leadership roles such as CEOs, female entrepreneurs or in positions on boards, particularly in the tech industry.
As someone who has spent the majority of my career in technology and now with PEXA, working in the LegalTech profession, this is an important issue to me.
Female entrepreneurship is an area that is largely overlooked. The Global Legal Tech Report (GLTR) identified a global issue of gender diversity in the LegalTech space with only 29% of respondents reporting at least one female founder or co-founder.
Continuing the disparity, companies with female founders raise less funding than their male counterparts, are less likely to raise subsequent rounds and retain less equity in their companies. This leads to female led businesses remaining smaller than their potential and missing out on the investment required to grow and flourish.
Considering research shows female influenced start-ups experience lower failure rates, produce more capital-efficient companies, and achieve higher venture capital returns, establishing diversity, equity, inclusion and allyship in the tech industry is vital.
Providing appropriate support to women will extend beyond the women itself – the Tech industry stands to gain.
This presentation will discuss:
- Funding challenges - education regarding the types of funding, understanding the implications of funding options, coaching for founder pitches, scan the market for those more likely to fund female founders
- Being heard – call out the bias and unacceptable behaviours. Female voices need to be at the decision-making table, consideration for diversity across the LegalTech industry.
- Female founders exist – shine the spotlight on the amazing women we know, be generous with each other, use social media, lobby industry bodies, universities, and corporates alike to work with us in showcasing female founders
