The Importance and Benefits of Multi-cloud Management

Hi, my name is Nura Gerwal, a Senior Software Engineer at IBM with about 12 years of experience in the extensive cloud network covering multi-cloud, public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud. Today, I want to enlighten you about the importance of multi-cloud management and how to strategize your own multi-cloud journey for improved market competency and personal benefit.

The Vitality of Multi-cloud Management in the Digital Age

Considering the unparalleled surge in digital technology during the COVID-19 pandemic and the increased reliance on large scale operations on cloud infrastructure, the need for multi-cloud management in today's digital transformation era becomes indisputable.

Among the myriad cloud management options available, multi-cloud management emerges as the trendiest strategy, though not without its fair share of hurdles. We noticed many organizations eager to adopt hybrid multiple clouds but lacked access to requisite tools and procedures. I would say about 30% are equipped with a multi-cloud orchestration platform.

Managing the Complexities of Multi-cloud Management

As we delve deeper into hybrid and multi-cloud environments, we come across complexities revolving around resource provisioning, automation, collaboration, security resiliency, and resource management for the various types of clouds.

Creating a data-centric IT structure equipped for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and enhancing IT environments with hybrid multi-cloud systems becomes a necessity for modern enterprises. However, amidst these demands, it's crucial to balance the challenges and benefits of implementing multi-cloud management.

Challenges and Advantages of Multi-cloud Management

Each cloud vendor, such as IBM Cloud, AWS, Azure, VM Ware, and GCP, provide specific advantages. Businesses can leverage these benefits and unshackle from single-vendor dependence by expanding their cloud deployments across various vendors. This strategic decision can considerably reduce the risk associated with a single vendor scenario.

Contrary to a popular misconception, a hybrid cloud model fully incorporates a multi-cloud model. However, the reverse isn't always the case. A multi-cloud configuration could include a hybrid structure, stand solely on individual clouds, or take on a combination of all. Overall it provides more dynamic and flexible options to businesses.

Insights into Multi-cloud Management

Multi-cloud management offers a solution to reducing the risk of over-reliance on a single cloud service provider. It facilitates workload distribution across several clouds—an advantageous feature that improves independence and reduces interdependence. A multi-cloud architecture harnesses the capabilities of infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), or software as a service (SaaS).

Tips for a Successful Multi-cloud Strategy

  • Flexibility: Keep your plan flexible and always open to new cloud options
  • Sticking to the standards: Rely on open source platforms for long-term success
  • Long-term gains: Invest time now to reap benefits in the future
  • Data transfers: A good multi-cloud strategy should outline data migration to another cloud
  • Scalability: Design your architecture to accommodate growth; some providers offer better data transfers, ML techniques, and monitoring services

While switching to a multi-cloud strategy, each organization will encounter unique challenges, such as legacy applications, resource management issues, or business processes complexities. But with proper planning and a tailored multi-cloud roadmap, businesses can successfully implement and reap the benefits of a multi-cloud architecture.

Finally, every multi-cloud journey varies from one organization to another, but the importance and benefits remain consistent across all enterprises. I hope this article provides you valuable insights into the world of multi-cloud management and propels you towards a successful multi-cloud strategy for your organization. Thank you for reading and happy cloud computing!

So I'm Nura Gerwal. I'm a senior software engineer with IBM and I'm having around 12 years of experience in cloud. And uh this uh uh IBM Automation Domain, I have been working on the multi cloud public cloud, private cloud hybrid cloud and all.So I've been in cloud journey from the very start of my career. And today I'm going to talk about like why multiple cloud management is important and why should we plan for our own multi cloud journey so that it will help us in gaining um good hold in the market and good for our own benefit as well. So let's start with it. Um So uh sorry. Uh yeah, let's start with it. I'm not sure like that slides are getting changed. So with COVID-19, like we all know, yeah, uh there's been a huge surge in the technology and the pandemic has brought forth its many benefits and the enterprises have been running on uh uh large scale uh operations on cloud infrastructure uh for some time now. And in this age of digital transform uh transformation advancement, there are many options to choose from. So I'm not denying that. So with all these options comes the newest technology or the cloud strategy, which is called this multi cloud.

So this is uh what I mean uh only not uh important but uh it comes with many uh challenges as well. So people are thinking of moving to multiple cloud, but there are so many challenges. So what are today's challenges? So there are certain organization that are already on cloud plan to adopt multiple hybrid clouds, but only 30% of the required procedures and tools have organization in place and about 30% have a multi cloud orchestrator, some platform which is required for multi cloud management.

So it is like people know about it, but they don't have the right set of uh required procedures and uh uh things uh for moving to multiple cloud management platforms. So uh the world is becoming increasingly complex. The challenges are there from shifting to hybrid to multi cloud environments and for handling this complexity, resource provisioning, automation, resource management, security resiliency, collaboration to manage different types of clouds. It's a key to long term success. So creating a data centric it structure that is ready for artificial intelligence as well and modernizing it environments with hybrid multi cloud is the need of all the pri enterprises. So what is the solution of all those challenges? So like I said A I which has been uh important uh on-demand strategy which the enterprises have been following. And hybrid cloud is important for today's on-demand business and multi cloud enterprises can achieve an innovation multiplier effect. Like if they can reconstruct reimagine their business models for this digital transformation. So enterprises are awake, awake to the reality that technology creates the basis for a competitive edge and how they can move and can adapt to all these market standards and market opportunities for multi cloud.

Yeah, but there are many challenges like I'm not denying the fact that there are no challenges. There are many challenges, the advantages that many businesses are now realizing that through multi, they can expand their cloud, they can impress the features of multi cloud, they can help um expanding their deployments. And at the same time, help the help to reduce the risk or mitigate the risk associated with only single vendor. Like using only one vendor is not that helpful. If I use multiple vendors like I can use, I can depend on multiple V vendors instead of one. So that is always helpful since I have been using multiple cloud and hybrid cloud um uh side by side. So there's a common misconception that when comparing hybrid and multi cloud environments or infrastructure is that the two worm is mutually exclusive, which is not actually a hybrid cloud model is also indeed a multi cloud model. The inverse is not always true. So a multi cloud configuration can be hybridized but it can also exist without the need clouds to talk to each other. So it can exist with uh individual clouds. Ca it can exist with multiple clouds, it can exist with hybrid and multiple clouds.

So if you see the picture, so this is like multiple clouds and they uh intersection is what something hybrid plus multiple cloud. This is the left side picture uh tells you that there are three different cloud which are being combined together to form a multiple cloud architecture.

So what is multi cloud management so far you at least got an idea of like multi cloud management is like having multiple clouds not to lock in with only a single vendor. So other than this, uh it uh the goal behind the multi cloud approach is to reduce the risk of relying on a single cloud service provider workloads can be distributed across multiple clouds which improves independence and reduces interdependence. So multi cloud architecture uses several different other available architectures like infrastructure as a service or platform as a service or software as a service. So if you are from a cloud background, it you will easily get uh I mean uh get to know like what is all these architectures are and there's nothing possible without these architectures in cloud. But if you are new also, then also you get to know like um infrastructure as a service software service are these are the things which are already in the market and which are already being adopted by various organizations. So multiple cloud architecture, multiple cloud management allows us to use all these architectures in place. It also allows us to have pri private, public and hybrid together. So you have different kinds of benefits as well. So what are the benefits?

So there are many m uh clouds vendors like you have IBM cloud, you have EWS, you have Azure, you have VM Ware GCP and many mobile. So you cannot uh just rely on one cloud. So one is offering one advantage. Second is offering another advantage. So you can rely on different, different clouds and they or you can um uh go with uh different clouds instead of locking in with one vendor, you can uh uh these are very flexible, you can adapt your uh existing infrastructure, you can plan your migrations. And as cloud computing has evolved cloud service providers specialized to cater to a particular workload application platform, et cetera. So businesses now choose to host different applications and workloads which are on different cloud providers instead of relying on one. So it means like organization can use services from various cloud service providers. And at the same time, it is also uh uses the different services from diff multiple cloud providers, right? So you can easily escape all the vendor lock in things. You can go with uh some better features for for different cloud. So if one cloud is go good in data transfer, so the other cloud might be good in data mining and monitoring. So you can have different benefits also. So that's why it's very beneficial to adopt two different clouds. And here are the different tips like how you plan your strategy. So I we have been using in this in our organization and we been working on the multi cloud approach for quite some time.

So there are my five critical strategies to get your multi cloud architecture plan stable, secure and on the right track. And of course, for the long term success. So flexibility, flexibility is very important. Technical innovation is constantly moving forward. And so you can't think of depending on single things. So even though you might feel like you are saving time taking a long term view towards resiliency, when you might need to um um leverage multiple clouds for scale, you should do it. Your strategy needs to work across multiple clouds. Keep flexibility in mind. So I say um you, you should be able to pick another cloud further down the line. So not to just go like I know this cloud, my organization has been working on this cloud and this vendor lock in for so many months, I should go with this, keep your plan flexible so that you can adapt to the next cloud as well, which is uh as per your business with the start use standard.

So if I say standard, so stick to the standards available, like uh which is uh we already have on the open source like cert is platform building on CNCF cloud native foundation standards. So try to adopt to these standards and reduce custom development on the start so that you you can set yourself for the long pace and for long term success. So try to use standards uh rely on uh these open source available platforms, try for long term gain. So invest today so that you can get the gains in future. So you may have to invest more time upfront, build the long term um gain and independence. And almost like um the database solutions is one of the examples like today, the database solutions are fully optimized for the cloud. And we have different automation techniques. We have different automated tools which can simply by our own cloud provider options. So try to think from the long term gains perspective like what is best in class if I'm today investing much time in learning and my resource management, that is OK. But think from the long term gains data data is also one of the important or feature or I can say one of the important uh factors in multi cloud deployment location of your data is very important.

Your multi cloud strategy should outline how you uh enterprise will migrate data to another cloud. This should include how long your company expects the migration to take place and uh the progression of your data migration, your cloud environments, et cetera, et cetera. So transferring the data across different clouds test your data transfers, etcetera is should be on your strategy plan. Scalability is one of the important factor things scaling when it comes to data architecture use multiple cloud providers as it is beneficial. Some provider provides better data transfer, some provides ML some provides monitoring, some provides other techniques so designed now to accommodate future. There have been many success stories like many companies have have been adopting and have been going through these all uh uh plans like they are adopting.

93% of the companies are already on the road map for this um uh multi cloud strategy, some are already uh have their resources uh on boarded for uh this transition. So to optimize data and collaborate in a digital ecosystem, it needs a multi cloud operating model for standardizing and automating common provisioning deployments, infrastructures, monitoring data protection and so many features across multiple clouds. So many universities are there who have been migrated, their own was uh two multi cloud approach and which gives them unmatched flexibility in choosing it resources. Their business has evolved and better. Uh I mean, uh what should I say? Better resiliency and uh less uh less followers, yeah, less followers. So while moving towards a multi cloud strategy organization will face a number of unique challenges around many things. Like I'm not denying the fact that they are not challenges. Every organization has its own set of challenges like legacy applications, resource management, resources, lesser resources, the skills, the correct set of skills integration issues, business processes, the complexities of the processes, the definitions, the rules, setting all clear objectives, getting it approvals and all those things.

But every organization needs to develop its own multi cloud road map. So which can be similar, which can be unique. It depends on how the business challenges are. But there are still many successful stories who have been adopting um where the enterprises have been adopting multi cloud hybrid cloud and A I together and the numbers are keep on growing and growing. So these are my tips and my take on why multi cloud management is important.

It depends upon organization to organization. So I hope this is impor uh this is um this talk will give you an idea of how multi cloud management works and why it is important, how we can plan and strategy on this and hope. Um you will also try to um get yourself more into the multi cloud world. So thank you. Thank you for listening me out. I hope you like the session and after hearing this, I will sure I'm sure like you will also plan for your strategy for multi cloud. Thank you all.
