Session: How technologists & nonprofits can partner to deliver lasting impact

COVID-19 highlighted the need for the tech, nonprofit, & government sectors to work together. As a result, there has been an influx of technologists who want to help but don’t necessarily know how to do so, as doing pro bono work is hard. Many nonprofits have experience with experts coming in and developing solutions but then leaving without a maintenance plan in place. Jen will share how Google.org structures its technical volunteering efforts to deliver lasting impact for nonprofits by walking through three case studies from our COVID-19 response efforts. She’ll discuss mistakes made & lessons learned from leading over 250,000 hours of pro bono work to help individuals & companies who want to lend their tech expertise maximize their impact.

Key Takeaways

  • Business, nonprofit, government, science, & tech communities need to work together to solve this public health crisis, as they cannot do so alone.
  • These collaborations are hard, but we will share best practices & lessons learned from over 250,000 hours of pro bono work.
  • Hear real world examples of how data & technology can drive change using case studies from Google.org’s work with nonprofits & civic entities.

Bio

Jen is the global head of technology at Google.org and leads all of Google’s pro bono initiatives. She has been at Google for over 12 years and works to connect volunteers with high-impact, technology-driven nonprofits around the world. As part of this effort she founded the Google.org Fellowship, which enables teams of software engineers, product managers, user experience researchers, designers, and more to complete up to six months of full-time pro bono work with nonprofits & civic entities focused on areas like education, economic opportunity, criminal justice reform, and crisis response, including COVID-19 relief.
