About the Role

The BMC Series is a collection of community-focused, open access journals that cover all areas of science and medicine. The ethos of these journals is that editorial decisions are not based on the perceived impact or interest level of papers, but on rigorous science.

As an Associate or Senior Editor with a strong background in a biomedical science discipline, you will contribute to the success of the BMC Series by handling editorial content BMC Infectious Diseases and by driving the content development of this journals. Communication is a key part of this role, as you will need to build excellent and productive relationships with the external Editorial Board who manage the peer review process and with internal teams responsible for journal editorial office support.

This role is offered on a maternity cover fixed-term contract basis and can be located in our Heidelberg or London office (hybrid working model).

Role Responsibilities:

  • Oversee content published in BMC Series journals, advising editorial board members and handling individual submissions yourself
  • Create journal development strategy for each journal in your portfolio, taking into account individual journal performance, as well as the overall strategy of the BMC series.
  • Identify and commission reviews, collections and supplements
  • Investigate and resolve publishing/research ethics cases, both pre- and post-publication, with the guidance of Springer Nature Research Integrity Group when needed
  • Build and maintain excellent relationships with Editorial Board Members and authors, hosting editorial board meetings.
  • Contribute to the recruitment and training of new editorial board members, ensuring they are aware of the ethos and editorial policies of BMC Series
  • Promote journal content and features

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Educated to PhD or MD level (or equivalent) in a biomedical field
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer-focused approach
  • Ability to critically assess manuscripts across a range of topics for novelty, scientific content, and their implications
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills, able to balance short-term deadlines with long-term goals
  • Previous solid editorial experience is needed to be considered for the Senior Editor level
