Session: Cost Effective Reliable and Scalable Services in Cloud Platform
Cloud platforms provide us the flexibility to build scalable and reliable services with minimum infrastructure setup and management cost. Reliability term used in these offerings is actually very broad and includes most of the service level objectives. Depending on the business, services SLO (service level objectives) varies and defines the expected availability, security and performance. With flexible offerings of the cloud, initially we do not pay much attention to our SLOs and instead set up our services infrastructure using the best of the cloud offerings provided. Over time, this becomes a pattern for the newly added services.
When we start collecting the cost benefits with cloud migration, it comes as a surprise that expected gain with cloud migration is comparatively much less than expected and wipe out the benefits of cloud migration. If not managed properly, Cloud migration costs can easily spiral out.
Service infrastructure should be defined based on the SLOs instead of the flexible cloud offerings. Service architecture and technology stack plays an important role in effective cloud resources utilization and hence should be carefully considered.
