The Role
Within our Database Administration team at Kyndryl, you'll be a master of managing and administering the backbone of our technological infrastructure. You'll be the architect of the system, shaping the base definition, structure, and documentation to ensure the long-term success of our business operations.
Your expertise will be crucial in configuring, installing and maintaining database management systems, ensuring that our systems are always running at peak performance. You'll also be responsible for managing user access, implementing the highest standards of security to protect our valuable data from unauthorized access.
In addition, you'll be a disaster recovery guru, developing strong backup and recovery plans to ensure that our system is always protected in the event of a failure. Your technical acumen will be put to use, as you support end users and application developers in solving complex problems related to our database systems.
As a key player on the team, you'll implement policies and procedures to safeguard our data from external threats. You will also conduct capacity planning and growth projections based on usage, ensuring that our system is always scalable to meet our business needs.
You'll be a strategic partner, working closely with various teams to coordinate systematic database project plans that align with our organizational goals. Required Technical and Professional Expertise
1. Database Monitoring and Alerting
- Monitor critical database parameters such as table space, segment usage, buffer cache utilization, redo log contention, and resource-intensive queries.
- Track the availability of background processes and monitor error logs and event logs to resolve errors.
- Real-time alerting across multiple database metrics, with proactive remedy of alerted issues by the DB team.
- Ensure email alerts for all tickets and real-time notifications for database activity and performance issues.
- Verify Data Center (DC) and Disaster Recovery (DR) sync using native cloud utilities.
- Monitor and tune Azure SQL in the Azure portal and manage alerts for Azure SQL Database and Azure Synapse Analytics.
- Generate intelligent assessments of performance issues and query performance insights in Azure SQL Database.
- Create, modify, and delete alert rules on metrics using the Azure portal for monitoring.
- Monitor Azure and AWS Oracle RDS, SQL Database, and Azure SQL Managed Instance resources.
2. Database Maintenance and Optimization
- Perform maintenance activities such as index maintenance, table space, table, and index fragmentation management.
- Carry out periodic database performance tuning and housekeeping activities, including purging DB logs and trace files.
- Ensure optimal performance of Azure services and provide database parameter tuning and operating system parameter tuning as needed.
- Perform regular defragmentation activities for better space management and performance as per customer policy.
- Maintain and optimize table maintenance, archival, and index efficiency.
- Deploy Azure virtual machines and cloud services (PaaS role instances) into secure Virtual Networks (VNets).
- Manage Azure SQL database configurations and maintenance of Elastic DB pools.
3. Backup, Recovery, and DR Management
- Perform orderly startup and shutdown of database services and restore databases in the event of a server crash with assistance from designated personnel.
- Conduct backup verification, health checks, and tune-ups of the database.
- Participate in DR drills, including housekeeping on the DR server and cleaning up archive logs, alert logs, and transaction logs.
4. User and Access Management
- Create, modify, and delete databases, database objects, users, properties, and jobs.
- Add, modify, and delete permissions to database objects, troubleshoot user login issues, and rectify database configuration problems.
- Grant and revoke database access to users based on customer policy and requirements.
5. Performance Analysis and Reporting
- Enable capacity planning by providing utilization and database growth information to the application teams.
- Perform quarterly trend analysis on capacity and space and provide status meetings and reports on ongoing environment health and activities on a monthly basis.
- Independently analyze, solve, and correct issues in real-time, providing end-to-end problem resolution within defined SLAs.
- Maintain documentation of all incidents and solutions provided as part of incident resolution and root cause analysis (RCA).
- Evaluate releases and recommend upgrade paths based on application team recommendations.
6. Patching and Upgrades
- Perform database patching, evaluate releases, and recommend paths for upgrading as per the application team’s recommendations.
- Implement a risk and mitigation plan for database-related issues.
7. Escalation and Support
- Provide database technical support with production SLAs and manage escalation processes if required.
- Participate in risk management and provide a mitigation plan for potential issues.
