Overcoming Challenges as a Woman in Tech

Every individual faces their unique set of challenges. As a woman in the tech industry, I have faced obstacles and setbacks that made my journey tough. The universal challenges we face include the pandemic, competitions, and day-to-day issues we encounter in our respective fields. However, being a woman added another layer of difficulties. Struggles related to gender bias and under-representation, for instance, can be daunting. Nonetheless, I learned some significant lessons from overcoming these obstacles, which I hope can help other women navigating their careers in technology.

My Personal Journey

Working in the tech industry was especially challenging at the beginning. When I started in data science, I was only the second woman in a team of 20. However, when I left the company, we had a balanced gender ratio of 50/50. Now, I'm proud to say that the team I'm leading as an Analytic head at GSG is dominated by 75% women. Through all these experiences, two significant lessons stood out that were instrumental in my journey.

Being Good at More Than One Thing

Accept critique constructively and utilize it to your advantage.

Some people discredit the potential of women in technical roles, assuming that we should stick to seemingly traditional or 'soft' roles. I embraced communication and extroversion – skills people often related to women. Instead of abandoning my technical proficiency, I balanced it with my interpersonal skills. By doing this, I excelled in two areas with one unexpected to many.

Never Hesitant to Ask for Help

Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but a strategy for survival and success.

During my mountaineering experiences, I learned the importance of seeking help when needed. Being the only woman in a group of ten on an expedition across a harsh trail in Greenland, I found myself in desperate need of assistance. The instances where I reached out for help did not make me weaker, but they fueled me to push beyond my limits. By acknowledging my unique strengths and understanding that it's okay to ask for help, I was able to prevail.

Building Leadership from Hardship

Struggles in your journey can transform into valuable lessons for personal growth and successful leadership. Sharing your struggles with someone you trust can ease the burden and offer a fresh perspective. Create a safe environment where questions and doubts are encouraged to facilitate effective communication and understanding. Below were crucial strategies that helped me establish myself as a leader in the tech industry:

  1. Sharing is Caring – Unload your emotional burden by sharing your struggles with trusted individuals, lightening your mental load.
  2. Create a Safe Space – Cultivate an environment where everyone can express themselves without fear of ridicule or dismissal.
  3. Understand 'WHY' – Have a clear reason behind every task to feel motivated and dedicated to accomplishing it.
  4. Never Underestimate – Create an atmosphere where everyone has the opportunity to excel, regardless of stereotypes or biases.

By overcoming challenges and showing resilience, one can pursue their passion and excel in their field, regardless of their gender or background. Sharing personal stories and lessons also helps inspire others navigating a similar path. Remember, even in a predominantly male industry, a woman can rise and triumph over the obstacles, leaving her mark in the field.
