Senior Manager, Software Engineering - Dirac Platform

As the group responsible for telemetry data ingest, storage and query functionality, the Dirac Platform group at New Relic is the foundation of all of the company's products. Engineers working on the New Relic Database (NRDB) contribute directly to the proprietary database technology at the heart of it all.

If the idea of leading a team that works on a platform that ingests billions of data points per minute, serves billions of web requests per day, and processes millions of messages per second at exabyte scale sounds appealing, please be in touch.  We are looking for someone with both hands-on technical experience in high-throughput, distributed systems in the public cloud as well as managerial experience who thrives on enabling their engineers.

Leadership and Strategy:

• Define the strategic direction for the team and roadmap for them to succeed.
• Identify gaps within the team’s systems, including pain points experienced by the team’s customers (internal and external) to inform the team’s priorities
• Be an advocate and spokesperson for your team’s work and for individual developers.
• Mentor and guide a distributed team of developers, fostering their growth and propelling them to excellence.

Quality and Performance:

• Ensure the reliability of our massive, high-throughput, telemetry platform.
• Champion best practices that elevate software quality throughout the team.

Collaboration and Integration:

• Foster close collaboration with various development teams to ensure effective outcomes.

The EM should have a proven track record in the following, which would support their and the team’s success. 

• Interest and ability in people management which fosters creativity, collaboration, and ownership.
• Significant experience developing software in a team environment.
• Reliability-first mindset for developing resilient software.
• Willingness to provide feedback to all direct colleagues, regardless of role.
• Experience in high-throughput Java, database internals, and/or robust, API-first platforms.

• Experience working with teams in an enterprise environment, managing the challenges unique to larger organizations.
• Experience managing software engineers.
• Leadership on an initiative that spanned two or more quarters with two or more teams.
