Promoting Robotics Activity and Fighting COVID-19 with Robotics and AI
In this era of technological advancement, the power of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a mystery. This article articulates my passion for promoting the understanding and application of robotics and AI, and explores their potential in our fight against COVID-19.
Robotics: My Passion and Journey
As an International Committee member of the International Robot Olympiad and a promoter of programming activities for children and girls, I am passionate about making robotics accessible to everyone. My achievements include leading a team that won gold medals in the International Robot Olympiad in 2018 and 2019, which was a first for Bangladesh. Additionally, I organise the annual national girls programming contest to encourage female programmers and promote gender equality in the tech industry.
Covid-19 Versus Robotics and AI
During these hard times of the COVID-19 pandemic, application of robotics and AI is of supreme importance. In the fight against COVID-19, I've witnessed the tremendous potential of robotics and AI in various applications such as:
- Early detection of diseases
- Identifying risk areas
- Contact tracing
- Symptom monitoring
- Enforcing social distancing rules
- Disinfecting public places
- Delivering goods to hospital staff and patients
- Predicting future pandemics
Applications of Robots
Through the use of robotics, high-resolution cameras, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and big data, we can optimise our strategies in battling this pandemic. Applications of robots include:
- Patrol Robots: These robots can report suspicious activities and monitor areas 24/7 to ensure safety guidelines are being followed.
- Doctor Robots: They help in monitoring patients, maintaining social distance and minimising human intervention.
- Disinfecting Robots: These robots can disinfect areas, reducing the risk of spreading the virus, while also minimising human contact.
- Delivery Robots: These robots help in delivering food, medicine and patient samples to the lab, reducing the workload of health staffs.
Applications of Artificial Intelligence
AI plays a crucial role in predicting risks, analyzing big data, diagnosing patients and recommending precautions. Below are some applications of AI:
- Chatbots: These virtual bots can interact with people, offer recommendations, predict risks, suggest food options and give isolation recommendations.
- Robotic Process Automation: This technology can assist in testing and diagnosis, treatment and cure, recovery and monitoring processes along with assisting in back-office operations.
Conclusion
While incorporating robotics and AI in our fight against COVID-19, it's critical to balance their use with human intervention. We must adhere to ethical considerations with respect to the data used and the privacy of individuals. Though technology has raised some concerns about unemployment, it should be seen as an element that is transforming employment rather than diminishing it.

Uh And before uh going to my presentation, I would like to just say a few words uh regarding my patients, uh you may already see my profile that I'm very much passionate about promoting a robotics activity for Children and uh uh girls uh programming activity.You will see three pictures there. Uh two pictures are from the international Robot Olympia 2018 and 19. I was a team leader uh of the of both of the year. And also I am an international Central committee member of International Robot Olympiad. And by the grace of uh Almighty uh Bangladesh participated for the first time in 2018 and, and they got the gold medal both in 2018 and 2019. And the leftmost uh picture uh this is uh from the girls programming contest. We arrange every year, the national girls programming contest and I'm the con winner of uh national girls Programming contest. And in the, in, in the front side, you will see a, a man stand uh sitting there and he is our IC T minister. Uh And uh from uh last three years, IC T ministry is actually uh promoting our uh high school programming contest. And this two topic is my passion. And now I would like to go to my, actually uh the topic of uh today's uh presentation. OK. And the main uh topic is the fighting against COVID-19 using robotics and A I.
And we know that we are all uh passing a very bad time uh during this pandemic and actually the for this pandemic time, uh we all are locked down in the places and different places. And in our country also, people are uh getting through a very tough time. And if we just this is a two days statistics that uh till now the total uh date is 413,000 and total cases is uh 7 million where the total population of the world is 7.5 billion. So actually very much tough, tough time for us. And we are trying to flattening the curve throughout the world. Uh And we all know uh about this uh curve that like uh by taking some protective measures, uh we are trying to uh flatten the curve and the robots uh are being used for various purposes uh to fight against this pandemic. If we see that some applications and robotics and artificial intelligence, like uh it can be used for early detection of the diseases, early detection of the vulnerable areas. And also like for identify risk using contact tracing information, uh diagnosing the symptoms, uh monitoring social distances, uh identify the people who are not wearing masks, uh sterilizing medical equipment, disinfect the hospital areas, uh deliver the goods to the hospital staff and the patients uh identify the people who are at risk predicting the next pandemic.
A lot of uh areas where we are using uh robotics and artificial intelligences. Uh So like we have to uh I would like to focus uh some specific robots and some specific uh applications. And like uh from this picture, you will find that how actually artificial intelligences are using. Like we have a lot of data like uh well, the people who are suffering from which area they are suffering, what are their symptoms? Uh And like what are their age? Uh what are the socioeconomics? A lot of data we have. So like we can collect the data from uh epi uh Demi data uh area from clinical data, from genetic data. And we can analyze this data using artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning and then we can like give some prediction. Uh we can diagnose, we can uh operate uh hospitals and we can give some uh prescribe some medicines. Uh So uh intelligence is using uh uh all the way and then you will find some uh robots like these are the petrol robots. Uh these petrol robots are used for the uh automa uh autonomous navigation purpose and they have the high resolution cameras, live images and even they can uh report suspicious activities, like who are not wearing masks, who are not uh keeping the social distance distances and like uh some other countries where we are not using the robots, we have like uh people from police and from the uh law enfor law enforcement that they are uh giving the petrol.
But it's not, it's our limitation that we cannot do this for 24 7. But if we deploy the petrol robots, we can get the service 24 7. And by the integration of artificial intelligence cloud computing, big data processing, actually the robot, these robots can uh perform uh amazingly.
OK. So it's uh it will be a good, good com combination. Uh Here, here are some examples of uh petrol robot like uh the first picture is from the uh Guen airport China. Uh So this robot actually monitor who are not wearing the mask, who are not uh uh maintaining the social distances. And if, if they find that the some people is not wearing the mask or not, we maintain the social distance, they give uh the message to them even also they send a message to the authority that the these people are violating the rules. And the second next picture is the petrol robot which is used in Tunisia and it is also uh used uh for a large, large areas uh to find the people who are not maintaining the rules of the uh COVID-19. And if you find the statistic that how many medical staff CS are uh like uh suffering from uh uh COVID-19, the total uh 90,000 people throughout the world. This is the data of the last month uh of the Reuters news, like total 90,000 people are suffering like for usa 19% people, uh health workers are suffering from COVID-19 and even in so in my country, Bangladesh, 11% health worker, uh health workers are infected with COVID-19.
And actually we have to uh if we give them the support to the medical workers, medical staffs, uh it it will be very much helpful. And for this reason, actually, we can use the doctor robots uh like uh some robots uh we can use uh to uh give support to medi medical staffs uh like the robot which is in Italy. Uh The name of the robot is Omy. Actually, it can monitor the different vital signs of uh patients and they can report to the doctor. The second robot, it can get the physiotherapy and so that the health workers can main maintain the social distances. The third robot can draw blood from the patient's uh hand vein and we don't need any kind of uh like uh uh human intervention to this, those type of things. And also uh another important aspect is the disinfection robot, uh like uh autonomous disinfection robot. It can reduce the risk of spreading the virus and they are using ultraviolet C and the hydrogen peroxide vapor. So the picture you uh see that is from the UVD autonoma, these disinfection readers and they have the lighter, they have the sensors and they can navigate automatically.
And if they found that uh when they are dis disinfecting, if any people are there, they just stop the disinfecting uh process. And so that the people don't get the uh go get the direct ex exposures of the disinfection process. Uh Like there are some other disinfection robots like uh nimbus. Uh XXX is a drone. Like mainly the ex drones were used uh to uh to spread the insecticide uh in the agricultural field. But during this pandemic area, they actually they converted their uh drones and they're using it to uh spread these infect disinfectant uh disinfection uh for this disease fend disinfection purpose. And uh recently in China, they deployed 2600 disease fend disinfection robots just for the disease function purpose.
And also uh some delivery robots are used uh to deliver food medicine and patients uh samples to the lab and also report to the doctor. Actually, they are trying to eliminate the human intervention, human touch uh so that the virus doesn't spread much. And the deployment of autonomous daily robot uh actually also uh lower the workload of the health staff. We know that all the health stuffs are really very much uh passing uh tight, tight time uh to uh for the patient uh to serve the patients. And this type of delivery robots can move autonomously even they can uh move from one floor to another floor using the elevators. And uh then we don't need to give any human inter mentioned for this uh the, the fast robot. Uh the key on delivery robot actually is used in the LA lab to uh deliver the pathological samples. And in the right side, you will find the Zipline delivery delivery drone. Actually, uh Zip line is a California based company, but they're also delivering uh medical uh equipment in the, in uh African countries. And uh the Zipline delivery robot actually, they can uh uh fly in a very uh big speed, uh night speed like one k uh 100 kilometer per hour.
And uh though the payload is a bit lower, it's, it can uh take a load uh around two kg uh together, but it is uh not uh but it is OK for uh uh delivering the medical equipments. And also not only the hardware things, we also have the software uh robotics uh processes like robotic process automation. Uh We are generally, we say software robotics and for during COVID-19, uh RPAS are all can be used uh to uh combat the CO COVID-19 uh and RP A ensures improve operational efficiency, scalability and also uh it decreases the operational cost. Uh And also uh actually, it can do a lot of works not only giving the support, but also the predicting. Uh At first we I mentioned about the big data processing uh and artificial regions. So RP A can be used for this uh intelligent things like it can be used uh to for the testing and diagnosis purpose. Uh It can accelerate co COVID-19 testing and reduce waiting time. Uh like uh it can test up to 90% task uh using just the RP A bots. And they didn't, they don't need uh any human intervention. And also it can accelerate patient diagnosis. The robotics process automation can accelerate patient diagnosis.
Uh Also it can detect the COVID-19 patients and also it can give the consultation uh by telepresence robots. So and it also can be used for treatment and curing purpose R PM. Manage the collaboration and communication of clinical data among the multiple things of process to reduce the vaccine development period. So it can be used for many purposes and also for recovery and monitoring purpose. Uh screening boards, monitor the health condition of the employees.
Uh and it can diagnose if they have they have any problems or not. It can track the COVID-19 updates, monitor the risk. It can manage safe return of people to COVID-19 free areas. And also for back office operation. Also, it can contact the center support to manage query. It can uh also use uh like intelligent chat box uh to give the services. It can uh do the rapid registration of the patients manage testing requests, streamline healthcare things. Actually, there are a lot of applications where we can use the robotics and artificial intelligence.
Uh I will just uh go for uh three more uh software based robots like for the prediction uh predicting the risk of infection if we uh have the data of the uh uh infected people. Like what were the health conditions? What were the social habits? What general hygiene habits? Uh They usually have uh what are the frequency of the interactions of people with them, their location, their climate like if we have a large pool of data, they can use the data and analyze the data. And they can predict like for me, what is the uh possibility of getting infected by the Coronavirus? And what is the possibility of getting infected for a certain uh areas for certain type of people, for certain type of climates? So actually, we need a large pool of data uh for this type of the big data analysis. And also we have uh some virtual chat bots. Uh they can chat with the people and also can give some recommendation, also give some prediction, food recommendation. Uh They also recommend whether these people is need any isolation or not. Uh Also they can give some uh food suggestions and also protected uh recommendations. And uh like uh I would like to go through the comments. Uh You know, actually I don't uh can I see the two windows together. So I, I was in my chat window, so I am here uh now uh to take the questions if there is any issue. OK.
So like uh when we draw, uh when do we draw the line between the use of these robots and human intervention? Actually, uh like uh I was uh mentioning that there were some uh like delivery robots they can use completely autonomously. Uh There are some petrol, they can uh actually uh work uh completely autonomously. In that cases, we don't need the human intervention, but some for some cases, we also need some un intervention, but it is very much reduced. And also uh it can reduce the work uh load of the people, workload of the health workers. And mainly for the predicting uh we can use the artificial intelligence and big data analysis. And you are uh also uh saying about like uh ethical considerations. Uh that is a very uh good questions like uh the technology that we are using uh actually uh like when we are using like contact tracing applications, it's a, a huge question uh for the uh I think uh like the uh my uh confidentiality of my data. So even in these cases, like uh right now in our country, we connect at one contract pressing uh applications. Uh But uh there was some concern about the uh like uh whe whether we will use this data uh for this purpose or, or we will use this data for another purpose.
Also like uh in that case is uh we have a contract that uh this data will be used only for this uh uh research purpose and it will be not used for any other purposes and this data will not be given to any other people. So actually, uh when we're taking this data for analysis, uh we also need to maintain the secrecy of the data, the secrecy, the privacy of, of the data also. And uh how are the people responding to all this technology changes, especially during this COVID time? Uh uh during this COVID time? Actually, it's uh mm we are very much uh used to with the technology, like in a developing country like Bangladesh people were not that much uh friendly with the technology. But from the last three months, we are using technology for all purposes from our day to day, daily life. So now it's uh getting some changes in the mindset of the people. Now they are accepting the technological uses uh uh before uh then be than the hour before time. OK. So like uh we have uh two minutes more. Uh So if I go to the like uh my last uh slide, it was like the, the deployment of autonomous robots not only protect the patients and medical staff but also help uh reduce health workers load.
There is some another debate like uh is the robot is causing the uh unemployment. So actually we say that it's not causing the unemployment. Actually, it's transforming the employment. So like uh for some low uh low end uh work, it is replaced by robots. But for high end creative work, it is not replaced by robots. So there is always some tradeoffs, some uh jobs are diminishing and also new uh trend is uh opening. So actually, uh I I don't want to say that robot is robot will create the unemployment and it is actually robotic and it is very important tool to fight against this uh pandemic. And we must explore this opportunity to collect an authentic data and we apply diligence to automate the whole process and fight against COVID-19 and now and also in the future and please stay safe and we are passing a very bad time.
