Position Overview

Springer Nature works with thousands of external academic editors that help us run our journals. These editors are a  key driving force for strong submissions and journal growth, ensuring that rigorous and timely peer review of new manuscripts takes place. Editorial Board Resourcing Specialists work closely with Editors-in-Chiefs (EiCs), journal publishing colleagues and our technology partners to create robust and scalable processes that aid the identification of suitable candidates, support the invitation of candidates and provide oversight onto their ongoing performance for the journals they are associated with. The role of the Editorial Board Resourcing Specialist is to contribute to both the development and implementation of the framework that will support this initiative with a particular focus on recruitment of China-based editors. 

Responsibilities 

1. Data management and analysis. Responsibilities include: 

  • Supporting journal EiCs and journal publishing colleagues in EBM recruitment by assessing journal recruitment needs and developing specific recommendations for how recruitment may best contribute to journal development. 
  • Using pre-defined criteria, develop datasets based on the scope of the journal and related field to support the identification of candidates for editorial board recruitment - with a particular focus on candidates that are based in China.
  • Screen and vet editorial board candidates to ensure that they are relevant to a target journal and that there are no concerns relating to ethics or misconduct.

2. Customer engagement. Responsibilities include: 

  • Engaging external Editors-in-Chief and internal publisher teams with the recruitment process, ensuring that goals, and processes are clearly communicated to all parties. 
  • Working with EiCs and internal publisher teams to ensure that suitable candidates are invited to join journals in a timely manner and that EiCs are provided with feedback on progress.

3. Process improvement. Responsibilities include: 

  • Supporting analytics and data teams to provide feedback and suggestions to support scalable tools and systems for external editor identification
  • Working with the external editor support team to support a normalised on boarding experience for new EBMs by providing feedback on processes - with particular consideration to processes that will best support China-based candidates
  • Contributing to a culture of continuous improvement in the Editor recruitment team. Working to propose ways of improving (or building upon) existing processes, contributing to implementation, and identifying new ways of supporting editorial board recruitment at scale.
  • Managing projects aimed at improving recruitment processes, workflows and documentation under the supervision of the Team Lead (Editorial Board Resourcing). These projects will have a particular focus on improving recruitment in China and delivery of targets for this region.

4. Training and Mentoring: 

  • Support the Team Lead (Editorial Board Resourcing) by contributing to training for Editorial Board Resourcing Specialists and providing additional mentoring as required. 
  • Act as a point of contact and source of expertise within the team, using skills and experience to support others and promote best practice.

Key Relationships

  • Reports into the Team Lead (Editorial Board Resourcing)
  • Works with a team of Editorial Board Resourcing Associates to identify and recruit new board members to target journals. Providing mentoring support and additional training where necessary.
  • Liaises with external EiCs and in-house journal owners to ensure they are engaged with the recruitment processes and that aims, processes and progress is clearly communicated to them.
  • Works alongside publishing teams to ensure that recruitment processes are optimized and of high quality, and that the recruitment team clearly understands the needs and scope of the journal. 
  • Collaborates with China-based teams at Springer Nature to ensure that recruitment is tailored to the location and that opportunities to improve recruitment strategy are identified. 
  • Collaborates with wider Editorial Engagement team to ensure that recruitment processes align with wider team strategy and that opportunities for improvement are identified.
  • Where appropriate, communicates with external vendors to deliver scalable processes for recruitment.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

Experience

  • Experience of STM journal publishing, with a good understanding of peer review and the role of Editorial Boards
  • Knowledge and awareness of research integrity risks, and the ability to coach and advise others.
  • An understanding of the research environment and the needs of researchers, a passion for science and a thorough understanding of recent trends/ developments in the field
  • Experience of communication with external editors and internal stakeholders
  • Experience in supporting new processes.

  • Confidence in communicating, engaging and working cooperatively with stakeholders at various levels of seniority, including researchers, editors, and other partners, in a professional manner.

Qualifications      

  • University degree in a scientific discipline
