About the Role

Nature Structural & Molecular Biology (https://www.nature.com/nsmb/) is a prestigious molecular biology  journal that places an emphasis on manuscripts that report a mechanistic understanding of any biological process. As well as research, the journal publishes Reviews, News & Views, Comments and Correspondence.

        

We are looking for a dynamic Locum Chief Editor, who can maintain Nature Structural & Molecular Biology and manage a dedicated editor team in a dynamic editorial and publishing environment that also includes Nature Cell Biology and Nature Cancer among others. This exciting and challenging role calls for a keen interest in the communication of science.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading an editorial team and working closely with them on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, commissioning and editing Reviews, Perspectives, Comments and News & Views, and writing editorials and research highlights.

  • Ensuring all content published in the journal is high quality and covers the breadth of the journal's scope.

  • Developing the journal’s content in ways that will strengthen its impact, and that will support the Nature Portfolio’s strategic aims.

  • Discussing research themes and projects with researchers at international conferences — willingness to travel is desirable – and research institutes.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Applicants must have a PhD, with a strong track record in research relevant to the fields covered in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology.

  • A keen interest in research within and beyond your specialty.

  • The ability to understand and critically analyse research papers.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable:

  • Postdoctoral experience.

  • Previous editorial and/or managerial experience.

This job is offered on full-time, temporary basis for up to 12 months.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $120,000 - $125,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
