Proactive Leadership: Empowering Career Advancement for Women in STEM

Hello, I'm Deborah Vere Vicious, currently leading as a scientist in quantum computing at VTT, Finland's largest research center. Alongside this role, I passionately work towards empowering women, sharing advice on proactive leadership, and mentoring them towards career aspirations in STEM-related fields. Join me on my journey, and let's dissect proactive leadership and how it can help women to strive forward and conquer their professional peaks.

My Journey in a Nutshell

Growing up in Mexico City, I often came across societal norms that typically discouraged young women from pursuing a career in STEM fields - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. With negative stimuli directed towards my interest in physics and mathematics, my confidence plummeted. However, my resilient spirit led me to a rewarding journey in physics. Today, I have marks of success including a Ph.D. in physics from Stanford, host of a TV show for Discovery Channel, and also numerous leadership roles in Wall Street and data science companies. Through my story and following proactive leadership, I wish to inspire, encourage, and collaborate with other women seeking to make big leaps in their STEM careers.

Defining Proactive Leadership

Proactive leadership is the art of foreseeing and seeking professional opportunities, planning for future developments, and taking necessary initiatives proactively. Unlike regular leadership where you lead when the opportunity arises, a proactive leader creates opportunities.

Strategies for Proactive Leadership

  1. Create Your Job: Don't confine yourself to job descriptions or boards. If you are passionate about a certain area in your field, create a job role for yourself around it, pitch your potential contributions, and establish your importance.
  2. Start Small: Irrespective of how small it seems, starting with a concrete action such as pitching yourself to appear on a podcast or getting your university to write an article about your work can have a big impact in the long run.
  3. Overcome the ‘Likability Trap’: Don't let likability dictate your professional behavior. Balancing likability and competency is vital for managing your own career.
  4. Keep Your Integrity: Stick to your values and align your tasks with your end goals. Not every opportunity brings you closer to your goals, be discerning about your choices and actions.
  5. Network: Establish yourself as an industry expert. Use networking as a tool to share your project ideas, professional accomplishments, and aspirations.
  6. Champion for other women: Elevating other women will not only foster professional goodwill but also contribute to a larger mission of gender equality in STEM.

Empowering Women in STEM

We need to empower young women interested in STEM by providing them with the necessary tools, advice, and the courage to forge their paths in these fields. Over the years, I have dedicated much of my time creating initiatives and workshops aimed at helping women break through the glass ceiling in their STEM careers.

Today, I invite all women to join my upcoming course "Lead the Way" starting this September - it aims at igniting women's leadership potential in STEM. Feel free to reach out via email or follow my social channels @DebbieBarry for more information.

Concluding Thoughts

Remember, success won't come to you unless you go to it. So go ahead, dust off any fears or doubts. Focus on your desired end-goals, be proactive about leading your career path, and step into your power. Together, let's revolutionize the narrative about women in STEM and create pathways for more female leadership in these fields. Our collective success can inspire future generations, and together, we can create a wonderful future.
