Session: How To Safely and Successfully Support Someone Who's Struggling With Their Mental Health
When someone you love is struggling with their mental health, it’s understandable that the very first thing you want to do is jump right in an support them. Unfortunately, some of the most common things you’ll do and say can actually drive a wedge between you and your loved one and cause you to no longer be a trusted support system for them.
Jessi knows this firsthand. When she was in high school, she struggled with her mental health. She was depressed, self-harming, and in a very co-dependent relationship with someone else who was also struggling. This relationship ended with his suicide attempt and her prevention of it. Now, Jessi did just about everything incorrectly when she tried to support this individual, and she firmly believes that she and he would have been much better off if she knew what she knows now about safely and successfully supporting someone else. In this presentation, Jessi will share her knowledge from personal experience, expert interviews, and published research about the best ways (and worst ways) of safely and successfully supporting someone who’s struggling with their mental health.
You will learn…
- The eight things you should never say to someone who’s struggling with their mental health
- Four strategies you can use to successfully support them
- The importance of keeping yourself safe while supporting someone else
