Finding Your First Job in Tech: A Guide for Students and Professionals
Starting your journey in the tech industry - whether you’re a student or a professional venturing into a new industry - can be challenging, even more so in times of global crises like the ongoing pandemic. However, let me assure you based on my own personal experience that there are strategies and tips to make this daunting process more manageable.
A Bit About Me
I entered the world of tech, more specifically machine learning and data science, two years ago, right after my master’s and in the midst of an economic downturn. Despite the hardships, and the stress about it being my first job, I found effective ways to increase my chances of getting employed in a time-bound manner. As an international student, this was of vital importance.
Maximizing Your Online Presence for Job Hunting in Tech
1. Leverage Your Github Account
One of the first and utmost tools that proved useful in my job hunt was Github. Not just owning an account, but populating it with at least two projects. Treat it as your portfolio for tech recruiters. Remember, your public account can showcase how often and how you use it.
2. Leverage Your LinkedIn Account
Next on the list is LinkedIn. Ensure to not only have an account, but to also link all your projects, Github accounts, or papers. The more comprehensive your professional profile is, the more appealing it is to recruiters and hiring managers.
3. Create a Website
Your personal website, even a simple one hosted on Github, can serve as a professional platform where you can feature your projects or share your insightful ideas through a blog. Again, your potential employer is guaranteed to check this out, verifying your skills and competencies.
Networking Matters
4. Attend Related Events
- Participate in tech events and career fairs. Take advantage of the increased frequency of such events, particularly after the pandemic.
- Remember, networking goes beyond just attending; use these events to connect with people who can provide help or guidance, even if they don’t work in your chosen field or are not recruiters.
- Make use of websites like Meetup.com, or your university career division if you are still studying, for career-related events.
Don’t forget to get the email IDs or LinkedIn contact details of the individuals you meet to have a ready network that you can tap into for potential job opportunities.
Finally, an application called Notion has been indispensable in managing my professional contacts and job applications. Its personal CRM function enables you to easily track your contacts and applications while ensuring regular engagement.
In Conclusion
While beginning your career in tech might seem intimidating, by leveraging online professional platforms, effectively networking, and making use of convenient tools like Notion, you can make it less stressful and more successful. All these have helped me in finding my first job and even new opportunities thereafter. Stay persistent and embrace the challenges. After all, the tech world welcomes problem-solvers.

So um I am discussing about finding your first job in deck uh as a student or as a professional who has uh never entered the egg industry. So I a little background uh I have a background in machine learning and data science.I started in tech two years ago after my master's and um I started in between the pandemic. So it was very hard to find a job, uh especially my first job. Um But I did try to deal with it as a second job and also like in art because of course, it was stressful if you look at that as a first job. Um So there were a couple of things that I followed to make sure that uh I get my job within like a um limited time frame that I have. I'm also international student. So I wanted to make sure that I get a job as soon as possible. So 23 things that I have uh you may or you may not know about it. Uh It's very useful if you have a github account and you have not only you have a github account, but you have at least two projects on it. Uh Once you, if you're familiar with github account, some uh if it is public people can see how many times you use it, uh how you use it. So it's like a portfolio that uh tech recruiters can look at. And it's very useful.
It also has a lot of impact. Um Make sure you have a linkedin account and that it has links to all your projects and your github accounts or to your papers. You have uh optionally, it's also useful if you have a website, I also had a website when I started. It's like a very simple website that I use github for. And there are like a lot of youtube videos to do that and it's very simple. Um It's not anything uh you know, special or advanced. Uh You just put some of your projects on it or you also use it as a blog to share your ideas, which is also checked. Uh Normally uh recruit recruiters or your hiring manager can see it and make sure that, you know, you have actual experience in it. And again, the fourth part is attending events like this, but not, this is not just like one event. There are so many events that started after pandemic and have had like helped so many people. So that's one of the things I did. Um Again, looking at these kind of events, you should say, also say that um you can also network through these events, you have uh I think even this event has like a networking tab where you can network with everyone.
So a lot of these uh meetups or um career events or speaker sessions has networking events in them where you can actually talk with people. And even if that person is not related to your field or he is not a recruiter, he can still be helpful in some way. So that is really important. There are also other uh events that I normally frequently attend, like women impact women hag there's like so many events for women in particular. Nowadays, we also would have in-person events because everything is opening now. So actually going to these meetups, you can also use meet up.com for that. It is used usually nowadays, it's pretty uh active. A lot of people are active. So you can also use that uh you can use, if you're still in school, you can use your university career uh division. They have a lot of career events, you have a lot of fair. Uh When I was in school at my last year, I also attended some career events at different uh universities around me, including my own university. And those are also opportunities to meet a lot of people. But also make sure that you get the uh email I DS.
So email I DS or contact or linkedin, where wherever you go, you have to make sure that you have that, so that eventually when you come back, you have like a bunch of contacts, um, who you can, like, reach out eventually. Uh You know, if you're not actively uh trying to find a job that would be really uh helpful, I'm going to just quickly make sure that I'm still visible to people. OK. I'm actually not sure if so, uh, um, uh everybody can hear me or not, but I'm still going to keep going. Um So last part of my uh thing is uh my presentation, I have like three minutes left uh is once I have all those contacts, I use uh application called Notion and I have a personal CRM there. So they have like this uh uh this app is really useful when you try you, when you're applying for a new job or if you are also collecting all these uh info through your networking events. I have almost like 50 to 60 contacts that I have saved in uh through this app. You can use any other app. But I think this is like a really good app that you can use.
It's called Notion and it has other things like you can also uh manage your job applications through it. So you can uh you go, you can use it for uh managing your jobs, you can use it for tracking your contacts. And it also makes sure that you are updated on your contact and you are reaching out to them again, uh, after some, uh months, uh, you know, to keep in contact with them and not just for the job. So, mostly about personal connection. Uh, that's something has really helped me to find a new job and even the new opportunities after this. So I think that's all I have.
