Help us develop the future of medical technology in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Labor and Delivery space! We are looking for a Lead Human Factors/Usability Engineer for our R&D team in the Maternal Infant Care business. Our motto is “Sending moms and babies home healthy.”
The Lead Human Factors Engineer will be a core member of the Maternal Infant Care Systems team and will lead usability activities for product development programs and for the Installed Base by defining usability strategies and planning and executing programs’ usability activities based on user-centered design principles and customer needs.

Roles and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Work closely with customers, marketing, clinical applications, service, and field personnel to understand key usability needs and develop metrics to quantify usability design
- Work with internal and external customers to plan, coordinate and execute formative and summative usability studies for new feature development or changes to the product design. Summarize the usability results per the internal work instructions and report results to program members
- Organize design-driven/concept creation workshops, create new concepts, brainstorm new user interface ideas and evaluate design concepts and user interface prototypes with end-users, report results to program members
- Provide domain expertise to participate in technical design reviews, technical discussions, and risk mitigations with focus on evaluation of design of user workflows, interactions, and experiences based on user-centered design principles and user needs
- Observe the patterns of use and the physical usage environment, analyze tasks, document and map workflows, interview users, organize and conduct focus groups, gather user requirements during the pre-design phases of the project, create environment and user profiles, report use study results to program members
- Participate in GE HealthCare usability and user experience initiatives and cross-business sharing, attend conferences for medical professionals and Human Factors
- Develop and document usability evaluation plans, protocols, reports, task analysis, risk analysis and use analysis reports. Provide usability assessments for features, design change and complaint investigations
- Prepare usability reports for product submissions to regulatory agencies, participate in regulatory audits as usability expert
- Develop methods to test and validate user requirement specifications and their effects on clinical application and user workflows
- Provide input during design phase for user interfaces, contribute to user requirement specifications and risk mitigations
- Represent Usability Engineering on program teams keeping them informed of schedules, deliverables, dependencies, and issues
- Manage usability lab and equipment to ensure that it remains an accurate use environment for usability studies
- Integrate usability into the organization’s roadmap. Engage with internal and external usability experts & capture cross-industry best practices
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in Engineering, Science, human factors engineering, cognitive psychology, graphical design, industrial design or related field
- Minimum 6 years with experience in Experience in Engineering/Technology and Human Factors Engineering
- Experience working in cross-functional relationships, strong influential and communication skills
- Minimum of 2 years of experience partnering with cross-functional teams
- Demonstrated ability to present new ideas to customers using sketches and mock-ups
- Demonstrated ability to identify users’ hidden needs
- Strong understanding of usability design and conducting usability studies
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects in order to meet safety, quality, performance, schedule, and budget goals
Desired Characteristics
- Master’s degree or equivalent degree in Engineering, Science, human factors engineering, cognitive psychology, graphical design, industrial design or related field
- 7+ years in Healthcare or Medical Device industry with experience in product development and human factors
- Demonstrated flexibility and practicality in applying user-centered design principles and methodologies to software and hardware in a business environment
- Experience managing outsourced resources involved in usability evaluations
- Experience working directly with customers or other end users in medical healthcare/device field
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to work harmoniously within globally located teams
- Basic understanding of system, electrical, and mechanical design, as well as software integration
- Practical experience in medical industry and applying standards to medical device design and development such as IEC 62366, 60601-1-6, MDR, HE75, and FDA’s Applying Human Factors and Usability Engineering to Medical Devices.
