As a former academic, I feel the pandemic has truly shaken up the way things operate in higher education. It made me realize that it's possible, even in some of the most traditional structures, to break free from old ways without sacrificing quality. As academic leaders strive to fulfill their missions and support everyone involved—students, faculty, and staff—the need for change on how we hire for top roles is clear. Instead of just trying to diversify candidate pools as an afterthought or relying on luck, we should take a more thoughtful, long-term approach. For example, implementing mentorship programs to nurture diverse talent from within our institutions or establishing partnerships with organizations that specialize in cultivating diverse leadership pipelines. Let's focus on developing these kinds of strategies that will lead us to excellence in the long run.
