Nature Portfolio is the world’s leader in publishing high-quality research from across the natural sciences. Its journals include Nature, the Nature Research journals, the Nature Reviews journals, Nature Communications and the Communications Journals.

Nature Cities, launched in January 2024, publishes original research, reviews and opinions on cities, urban issues, and urban environments, including on the ways cities impact and are impacted by their broader social, economic and ecological environments. The journal considers submissions from the natural and social sciences, engineering, planning, policy, and other relevant areas.

About the Role

We seek a candidate with a background and interest in urban research as demonstrated by education, scholarly publications, and research and other work experiences. The ideal candidate will have experience and familiarity with a range of relevant quantitative methods, potentially in addition to others. We are open to candidates with backgrounds in any area of urban research but are most interested in those whose expertise complements rather than overlaps with those of our current editors (see https://www.nature.com/natcities/editors).

In this position, you will work closely with the Chief Editor and the editorial team on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection; commissioning; editing of Reviews, Perspectives, Comments, and other content; as well as occasional writing for the journal. This work requires decisiveness and excellent time-management skills as well as a communicative, collaborative spirit within and outside the team, as you will also engage with the broader urban-research community, including at conferences and site visits.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in an area relevant for urban research, such as in urban science, engineering, social or natural science, public health, etc.
  • Track record of published research relevant for urban topics and/or contexts
  • Strong work ethic
  • Outstanding organization and time management skills
  • Decisiveness leavened with openness and humility
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and strong fluency in English (written and spoken).
  • A collaborative spirit: you will be working in a team setting, striving to support and mentor others, and to maximize our collective success.
  • Flexibility: be comfortable with working in a fast-paced environment and understanding that our priorities may change with the evolution of urban research and what’s happening in the world.
  • Eagerness to meet researchers worldwide, in person and virtually, to learn more about them and their research, help them learn more about us, and solicit submissions in areas of interest.
  • For consideration for the senior-editor position, candidates must have extensive editorial experience in a clearly similar role on one or more urban-research journals.

This is a full-time, permanent position, located in our Berlin, Heidelberg, or Madrid offices on a hybrid working model.

All applicants should send a CV and a brief cover letter explaining their interest in the position.
