Session: Working Mothers and the Work-Life Balance Myth
As a professional woman and member of the executive team at a technology company that I love, I am here to tell you that the work-life balance is a myth. At least for working mothers. There is no balance, no evenness to the amount of passion you put into either role. Some days you will be a better professional and some days you will be a better mother. Most days, something will likely be on fire. But most people don’t feel comfortable discussing this in a real way at work. So how do you approach the subject of mothering, family and kids at your current job? How do you know if you’re in the right place? How do you have those frank conversations at your current place of employment and , even more elusive, when you’re going through the hiring process? What questions should you ask? How do you negotiate what you want? These are some of the topics I’d like to tackle for women out there that are already mothers, or making plans to be. I’ve been there. I was lucky enough to have an opportunity with an amazing company with whom I could have this open and honest dialogue and come out of it with both sides being happy. But few are so lucky. And I want to help those women with hard decisions ahead. This talk won’t be about balancing, or leaning in. It will be about getting as close to what you want as you can, letting go of the rest, and how to do that successfully.
