Session: Intersectionality in Action: Building Inclusive Leadership in the Tech Industry
While there have been pushes to increase diversity in the tech industry by building pipelines from the bottom up, it’s equally important to focus on up-leveling women and minorities who are already in the industry. Women of color, especially, face barriers that prevent them from advancing beyond middle management and into leadership roles. In this session, LogicMark CEO Chia-Lin Simmons will highlight the importance of intersectionality in elevating the leadership representation of minorities and women of color in the workplace.
As a woman of color who has held numerous roles as a founder, CEO, VP, and more, Chia-Lin will explain how the lack of intersectionality in approaching workplace diversity and inclusion can create blind spots and perpetuate the marginalization of certain groups.
She will also share insight on why companies need to prioritize diversifying their boards as the first step toward building a more inclusive workplace environment. Research by Harvard Business Review has shown that a diverse board improves a company’s board performance, which leads to increased innovation and better decision-making. Despite this evidence, many companies still fail to emphasize the importance of diverse boards, heightening the lack of diversity across leadership roles. Chia-Lin will cover next steps and actions that need to be taken to promote an intersectional approach to diversity and inclusion.
