About The Role
Communications Engineering publishes high-quality research from all areas of engineering. The journal is part of the Nature Portfolio open access titles, which includes Nature Communications, Scientific Reports and other Communications journals.
As Associate or Senior Editor, you will work with the engineering community to select and prepare manuscripts for publication in the journal. You will commission secondary content such as Reviews and Commentary. You will also promote the journal’s coverage of all the fields within this broad discipline.
This role can be located in our Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, New York, Jersey City or Philadelphia offices on a hybrid working model. Please note that this position is offered on a full-time permanent basis.
Responsibilities include:
- Handling original research papers and managing all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review.
- Engaging with and supporting the Editorial Board of the journal in their management of manuscript assessment.
- Making well-reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice.
- Liaising with editors at other journals across Springer Nature and with experts in the international scientific community.
- Attending conferences and visiting research institutes to engage with the communities and to represent the journal.
- Commissioning and editing Reviews, Commentary and other invited articles.
- Contributing to journal strategy and editorial policies.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
Essential
- A PhD in any area of engineering research. We are particularly interested in candidates with strong interest in telecommunications or other areas of electrical engineering and will prioritise these candidates in the first instance.
- A passion for engineering and a desire to learn more. You must be able to demonstrate the breadth of your interest, both within and beyond your speciality.
- The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different disciplines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English (written and spoken)
- A self-starter with ability to organize your own time to effectively fulfil the needs of the journal.
- A desire to travel and meet researchers worldwide, when appropriate and as required, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.
Desirable
- Postdoctoral experience is an advantage, but is not essential
- Editorial experience would also be an advantage but is not essential.
- Knowledge/experience of machine learning techniques would be valuable.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: Associate Editor: $80,000 / Senior Editor: $95,000.
