Session: The Future of Finance and the 100 Year Life
Picture yourself in 5 years' time. What does that look like? What will you eat? Where will you be? What will you do? How is your quality of life? Are you able to live a life without limitation? Now add 10 years and ask yourself the same questions. Add another 20 years. What would life look like for you when you turn 100?
The ageing society narrative is often conflated with a crisis scenario where a ‘grey tsunami’ engulfs the economy. The insolvency of pension funds and social security that dries up before your end of life are the main fears propagated by many. What gives these static views of life is the outdated assumption that societal resources will be drained and economic productivity will be dragged down by older adults.
The 100-year life should change our thinking. It is a completely new mind shift on how we view our savings, our relationships, our health, education, careers, and even our purpose. Financial services will need to support us through these changes. We can no longer rely only on pension funds and investments. We need to diversify our portfolios and we need to earn passive incomes. We need to look into investing in alternative assets. We need to build our wealth in such a way that we do not outlive our assets.
