Networking and Mentorship Keys to Unlocking Doors

Networking opportunities and mentorship are crucial for advancing women in tech advisory roles. Unfortunately, women often face challenges in accessing the same networking opportunities as their male counterparts. Expanding professional networks for women through exclusive events, online communities, and mentorship programs can provide the necessary support and opportunities for growth. By facilitating connections and sharing knowledge, we can accelerate the ascent of women in advisory positions.

I've had a lot of success building my network by attending industry events in NYC, conferences, and just asking my network for more opportunities. It is really important to build a supportive network of both men and women to reach your goals. I would encourage at conferences reaching out ahead of time to find out if there are any women focused events, as diversity is a huge topic in our industry. At some of the larger wealth advisory custodial events there is usually a women's group brunch or networking happy hour, where I have not only met other fintech peers but clients that are in the advisory space who are women. I have found through these events you can create really strong partnerships and connections. It sometimes involves some research and pre-planning but attending these in person are really valuable.

If there is an upcoming conference and you don't see one of these types of events, it also would be really valuable to sponsor one or host a women focused event for our industry to get exposure. I know most events are open to it and will create the appropriate space for it if it is missing. We need more networking opportunities in the industry, the conferences tend to still be leaning more men as attendees, so finding ways to get together is important even in smaller groups.

You also can typically get an attendee list ahead of time, and create a smaller coffee group or reach out ahead of time just to network and most are open to it (I always am!) so even if it is not an official event finding ways to introduce yourself to other women I think that is a great start.
