Introducing Bahia Shay: Pioneering Space and Technology in the Middle East

Hello everyone, I'm Bahia Shay, the CEO of a Space and Technology company and the National Point of Contact at the Space Advisory Council at the United Nations. In addition, I also serve as the Chairwoman of a Business woman committee at Chamber Roman. My company—based in Oman—is the trailblazer as the first private company in the Middle East's space sector, which until now has been predominantly government-led.

The Shift in Middle East's Space Activities

Most governmental space sectors in the Middle East focus on standard satellites for communications. However, a shift is being observed with countries like UAE, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and Algeria, leading the movement towards heightened space activities. Not just your usual satellites, we're talking real, advanced space activities. The goal is to transfer this knowledge and technology to Oman and the region's private sector, which until recently has been untapped.

Starting Up and Challenging Mindsets

Starting up in the space sector is not just about establishing new enterprises—it's about changing mindsets. We've engaged with sectors such as education and have initiated projects to build a new sector from the ground up. Challenges exist, but they don't overshadow the plethora of opportunities in areas such as education, technology, and space projects.

Path-breaking Projects in Oman

Our crown jewels are two significant projects we embarked on in Oman. The first is the construction of a Space Habitat Center. In 2018, astronauts selected Oman as an area resembling Mars and the moon. Our aim is to establish this space habitat center for commercial clients, schools, and tourists alike. The second project is building a Space Launch Station, making the most of Oman's geographical advantages. We have completed the preliminary feasibility study and chosen the best location in Oman.

Looking to the Future in the Middle East Space Sector

Apart from our flagship projects, we offer a range of services, including providing satellite imagery for various platforms in and out of Oman. We're extremely proud of UAE's achievements in the space sector and are optimistic about undertaking large-scale initiatives, not just utilizing technology, but creating it.

Organizations like ours not only contribute to the technology and space landscape but also help change perceptions and enhance knowledge transfer across sectors.

Hello everyone. Uh This is uh Bahia Shay. I'm the CEO of uh Space and Technology Company. Uh I'm also the National Point of Contact at Space Advisory Council at United Nation uh as well.I am the chairwoman uh of uh uh space uh uh chairwoman of uh of a Business woman committee at Chamber Roman. Um My company is based on technology. It is the first private sec uh private company in uh in Oman and uh in Middle East as a private sector. Uh mostly, mostly uh uh what we do here as the topic, space sector, mostly, mostly uh who will do uh the space activities is uh the government. And uh that is what uh the normal things. And uh so um yes. Uh now the governments, like many countries in the Middle East, they are already uh running a space sector activities. Um Not meaning the, the normal um satellites uh for example, for communication. Yes. Uh I mean uh more um activities related to space, real space as you know, mostly um as um uh other countries, we use the technology and uh what we work now here in uh Oman and Middle East. Um We worked uh to have um this uh knowledge to be transferred uh to, to uh to be transferred to Oman and Middle East as well.

Uh We have good example in Middle East uh related to space sector, we have uh UAE uh we have Dubai as well as uh Mohammed Rashid uh Center, space center and as well uh Saudi Arabia, they start already their uh initiatives on this um as well as well as Algeria, some countries, they already um do their work on that.

Um Mostly um um here, we, we need when, when we start uh space sector, uh mostly we need um uh not just to start the sector but also to change the mindset. Uh So we worked in many sectors to education for a change mindset, knowledge transfer, knowledge transfer, um uh built up uh a new sector and the new uh projects. So, uh yes, uh mostly uh there is some difficulties but um uh there is uh a lot of opportunities uh as well as a lady and uh as uh the, the leader of uh the only uh space uh company here in Oman and uh Middle East as a private sector told you uh mostly the government, they do some uh activities normally, but that is private sector.

Uh There is uh some challenges uh we faced but it is not that much cha challenges that can stop us. Um uh There is uh a lot of uh opportunities. As I said, uh we start in many uh diverse things like education, technology uh and space projects. We have um very two big projects here in Oman. Uh that's kind uh change. Uh The, the projects here in uh in for space sector and add values, a lot of values. One of them is uh to build a space habitat uh center, it is fixed space habitat center. Um There is uh in 2018, uh some astronauts choose uh uh choose uh Oman to be uh one of uh the areas that's similar to Mars and the moon. And now we want and a lot of astronauts come here to have training uh on this land. Um Now, what we are working on to make a space habitat center here in Oman. Um for many people can come commercially and uh for uh as a science center and also as um as um a place that come, the people can come and live uh for a vacation uh for to see what is there in uh in this habitat. Uh And the second project uh Oman is one of the best uh countries in the Middle East that can become to make a space launch uh space launch uh stations.

And um we worked on this uh for a study and already we finished the study, we, we choose the best location in Roman to for a space uh to be space station. And Uh Yes. So these two projects can uh convert this uh the, the uh yeah, and it convert the situation now for better situation. Uh Rather than this. Also, we, we're working in uh many services like provide satellite services uh image uh image uh imagery from the satellites and uh for uh many uh projects here in Oman and outside Oman. Uh Yeah, that's it about uh uh space sector uh in Middle East. Uh We are proud what UAE uh did so far in, in the space sector and the other countries and we are looking forward to, to have uh big projects and uh big initiatives uh in the space sector, not just to use the technology but to build the technology one day. Uh So, thank you so much for this opportunity and I hope uh the people who are here in uh today who are listening to my uh session uh to get uh some benefit and you can contact me uh via linkedin or uh Twitter as well.
